Jawara Alleyne Transports You to the "Eye of the Storm" for FW24
Fashion East alumnus Jawara Alleyne presented his Fall/Winter 2024 collection at London Fashion Week, hosting an off-schedule showcase on the final day. Held in St Mary Le Strand Church, the showcase saw guests enter the holy venue for a story that "starts with a hurricane," according to the show notes.
Taking us back to 2004, the year in which Hurricane Ivan swept through Alleyne's family home, the collection looked to the concepts of deconstruction and reconstruction, presenting silhouettes inspired by the designer's nautical heritage of the Cayman Islands, characterized by a sense of Caribbean ease and lightness.
The collection began as an outreach program which saw Alleyne work with Ark Burlington Danes Academy, whereby three students worked on projects within the collection, with Kostantinos Slouzi's textile works making the final cut.
Across 20 looks, Alleyne presented a series of "ideas that circle a storm at the center." Presenting through draping, knotting and wrapping techniques, the collection is crafted from hardy fabrics like corduroy, denim and waxed cotton. Accessories take influence from mangled driftwood, while vests mimic floating devices and a Bendel Hyde-inspired color palette rounds out the collection.
