The Internet Is FURIOUS That This Awful Trend Might Make a Comeback

Design trends are like a revolving door: What's old and outdated at one moment will be coveted and cool again in a few years. Or months! Or weeks! But that doesn't mean that every trend deserves a major comeback moment. Truth be told, some fads are best left in the past.
So you can imagine our pure shock when we spotted glass-block walls back on our social media feeds. In the event you've forgotten about the trends of yester-decade, this setup is like a cross between a clear pane of glass and a brick wall. The stacked glass blocks offer privacy while allowing light to pass through. While a glass-block wall seems like a good idea in theory, many agree that it looks too outdated to be revived. Besides, we've found plenty of other, more stylish ways to create privacy since the height of this trend.
We haven't seen glass-block walls since the early aughts, and just when we assumed they were gone for good, an Instagram account called Home Wisdom US posted a DIY version of this old-school setup. As expected, the internet had a lot to say about this project. "What in the 1990?" asked one commenter. "Patrick Bateman called," another quipped. "He left his business card and said he wants his wall back." A third kept it simple with, "I hate this so much."
But while the glass-block wall was the source of much ire, others were furious to see that the DIYer turned two of those transparent bricks into a soap dispenser. "Don’t ever do this," one Instagrammer warned. "Unless you want mold, then go ahead!" "You can't even wash them and the soap will sit around for all eternity," one person noted.
While a moldy space is never in vogue, we have to admit that beauty is in the eye of the homeowner. A glass-block wall may not be everyone's thing, but if the owner's happy and has a clever cleaning plan? Well, that's a DIY job well done.
