Since 1969, Imbi Porkball Noodles has stood as a beloved choice among locals. Amidst the bustling streets of Imbi, where cafes and restaurants flourish, this long standing stall remains a hidden gem, serving up delectable porkball noodles.
Imbi Porkball Noodles is nestled within Restoran Win Heng Seng, tucked away in a corner of this bustling coffee shop. Situated along the lively main road of Jalan Imbi, this establishment draws both tourists and locals alike with its array of food stalls.
The coffee shop offers both indoor and outdoor seating options. Despite our early arrival at 10am on a weekday, the place was already bustling with customers, leading my dining companion and me to share a table with others.
A welcoming staff member was tending to customers at the corner stall, where they served the traditional porkball noodles. I patiently waited behind a small queue before placing my order; evidently, it was a popular stall in the area.
What I tried at Imbi Pork Noodles
Intrigued by its name, I opted for the signature dish of the stall, a bowl of Pork Ball Noodles (RM15) which came with yellow noodles and bihun as per my selection. The portion appeared to be quite generous, making it a hearty option for breakfast.
The noodles were complemented by a few slices of Chinese sausage, garnished with savoury minced pork and fresh spring onions. A unique touch was the inclusion of small, deep-fried pig intestines served alongside.
The mixture of yellow noodles and bihun offered a satisfying texture, leaning towards a firm consistency. Though not precisely al dente, the noodles were still enjoyable. Additionally, I detected a distinct peppery flavour, adding depth to the dish.
Continuing with the sausage, the stall was exceptionally generous, offering ample portions, with each piece being quite substantial. Interestingly, it had a reminiscent flavour of liver sausage. Its addition truly elevated the dish to a whole new level.
After savouring a few mouthfuls of noodles, I delved into the soup, featuring 2 white pork balls and 1 fried pork ball. It proved to be both refreshing and robust. The broth exuded a perfect blend of pork flavours, lending it a deep and satisfying richness.
The distinguishing feature of this dish lies in its soup ingredients. Instead of sliced pork or minced meat, the soup is enriched with their handmade pork balls. Although I anticipated a more springy texture, these pork balls provided a denser consistency.
Final thoughts
Despite the sweltering weather and stuffy environment, my meal at the old-school coffee shop was thoroughly enjoyable, thanks to the delicious food that outweighed these minor drawbacks. Additionally, the vintage ambience of the place added a unique charm to the overall experience.
The dish came with a relatively higher price tag, but given its location in a tourist hotspot and the abundance of ingredients, it remained within an acceptable range.
