How to turn your spare room into a gaming den
7 steps you can take to make your dream gaming den come true.
Whether you’ve just moved into your new BTO flat or you’re thinking of revamping your current home, wouldn’t it be nice to have your own cosy gaming den? As a gamer myself, having such a space is a dream.
But even if you’re not a gamer, you can convert your spare room into a place for reading, binge-watching your dramas, doing yoga—you get the idea. Below, I’ll list the steps you can take to create your own gaming den, but feel free to replace all items relating to games with whatever makes you tick.
Remember that the most important aspect is to create a space that you enjoy spending time in. Tailor the gaming den to your preferences and make it a place where you can relax and fully immerse yourself in your gaming experience.
1. Plan and design
Consider the layout of your room and plan how you want to arrange your gaming setup. Take into account the placement of windows, doors, and electrical outlets. Choose a theme or colour scheme that reflects your gaming style. This could be based on your favourite games, genres, or colours that create a comfortable and immersive atmosphere.
Personally, I prefer to keep things simple. I’d also go for a modular design, as opposed to built-in shelves, for instance, in case I want to change my room layout again.
2. Furniture
Invest in comfortable and ergonomic furniture, like a reputable gaming chair and table. These are essential for long gaming sessions without compromising on your physical health. Ensure there's enough storage for your gaming accessories and equipment by using shelving units, gaming racks, or storage bins to keep things organised.

If you’re a console gamer, invest in an LED TV which gives you an energy-saving but quality viewing experience. You can also add on a soundbar that produces optimised sounds for more immersive gameplay. Throw in a comfy sofa or recliner and you’re good to go.

3. Gaming setup
Choose a dedicated gaming console or PC setup depending on your preference. Invest in a high-quality gaming monitor with low input lag and high refresh rates for a smoother gaming experience. For a better experience, add accessories like gaming mouse, keyboard, controller, and headset.

4. Lighting
This is not a must but it adds to the atmosphere if you install LED lighting strips behind your desk or around the room. Many gaming peripherals also come with built-in RGB lighting. Use smart lighting systems that allow you to change the colour and intensity to match the mood or theme of your gaming sessions.

5. Cable management
The often forgotten part is to keep cables organised and avoid clutter. Cable management solutions like cable clips, ties, or cable sleeves can help achieve a clean look. Consider using a cable management box to hide power strips and excess cables.

6. Gaming memorabilia
This is my favourite feature of a gaming den, which adds a personal touch and makes it different from others’. That is to display your gaming collection, whether it’s physical game copies, figurines, or other memorabilia. What’s a dedicated gaming den without some gaming posters, artwork, collectibles or merchandise, anyway? You can place these display shelves and cabinets on the sides of the room or use it as a room divider.

7. Comfort
Last but not least, ensure your gaming den is a comfortable space with adequate ventilation and temperature control. Consider adding cushions, blankets, or bean bags for additional comfort during long gaming sessions. You can also use rugs or carpets to add comfort and soundproofing to the room.
