How to set up karaoke at home in Singapore
Channel your inner singer in the comfort of your own home with a karaoke system.
Gatherings are great time to bust out that karaoke machine! Apart from streaming all the latest flicks, perhaps you can channel your inner singer spirit and set up a karaoke system at home. Sounds troublesome? Let us break it down for you into seven little steps.
1. Choose your karaoke system
If you have the budget, you can purchase a karaoke machine, which usually comes with speakers and microphone(s). Some machines have access to a song library (subscription fees may apply), while others have CD/DVD players or USB ports for song playback.
Alternatively, you can use karaoke apps on your computer, tablet, or smart TV. There are various apps available that offer a vast library of songs (subscription fees may apply), such as Smule and WeSing (Quan Min K Ge).

3. Audio setup
Connect your karaoke machine or device to external speakers for better audio quality. If you have limited space or dislike bulky speakers, consider investing in a good soundbar that can produce spatial audio or a portable speaker.

4. Microphone setup
Connect your microphone(s) to your karaoke machine or speaker. Most karaoke machines come with at least one microphone, but you can add more especially if you have a mic hoarder. For those working on a tight budget, you can also get microphones with a built-in speaker.

5. Choose a karaoke source
If you're using a karaoke machine, check if it comes with a song library. Otherwise, insert a karaoke CD/DVD or USB drive with your favourite karaoke files. For apps, select your desired songs from the app’s library.
6. Adjust settings
Adjust volume levels for both the music and microphone(s). Some machines and apps allow you to adjust key and echo effects for a more customised karaoke experience.
7. Create a comfortable space
While you can convert your living room into a karaoke area, you can also turn a room in your home into a karaoke box for a more cosy singing session. You can even add some stage lighting or decorations to enhance the atmosphere.
For those who are worried about becoming a nuisance and disturbing your neighbours, you can opt to soundproof your room and windows by installing noise-blocking or noise-reducing products like curtains and foam panels.
