Surprise birthday celebrations are usually joyous occasions, but for Singapore actor Herman Keh, he was scared to the point where he was crying.

Keh, 27, told Shin Min Daily News recently that he was on an overseas shoot in Malaysia with local actor Bryan Wong and chef Melvyn Lee on his birthday on Sunday (14 May), and the production team decided to celebrate in his birthday in a “special way” — by pulling a prank.

The Star Search 2019 runner-up told the Chinese evening daily that the preparations started a few days prior when they asked about his food preferences and decided to get a mango cake for him.

As for the prank, he recalled that the team didn’t mention his birthday at all for the entire day and everything went down when they were filming their confessional scene at night.

Keh recalled: “The director felt that I didn’t speak well and wanted me to re-record it. In the end, Bryan got angry with the director. This was the first time I’ve seen Bryan angry. Bryan walked away but the director pleaded with me to continue filming. However, they were still not satisfied and I almost broke down.

“At this time, Bryan, who was holding the birthday cake, came from behind me and sang the birthday song. The production team also joined in.”

Aside from feeling surprised, Keh confessed that the prank scared him until he cried.

The show that he’s filming is meant to introduce viewers to Malaysia’s food and culture, and it marks the first time Keh is shooting in Malaysia.

It was also the first time Keh is filming with Wong and Lee. He added that they all work well together and “have endless topics to talk about”.

When asked about the birthday gift that he wanted most, Keh told Shin Min that he didn't want anything.

“I usually buy whatever I want. I just hope that I don’t receive any food items because if the portion is too much, I can’t finish it and I think it’s a waste. But if you’re treating me to a meal, that’s fine,” he explained.
