Helen Ng is getting treatment for dermatomyositis

25 Aug – Hong Kong singer-actress Helen Ng recently revealed that she has been diagnosed with dermatomyositis.

The "Come Home Love" actress, who spoke about her condition to Mingpao, shared that she had lung fibrosis due to the said automimmune condition paired with pneumonia, but that she was lucky to have detected it early and had since been treating it with western medicine.

"In the beginning, I felt numbness in my hands, and my fingers were in so much pain that I was unable to even wash the dishes. But the doctor said that I would be able to recover within two years of treatment," she said.

Helen admitted that it was hard on her for the first few months of treatment, having had to take 16 pills daily including steroids and injections - which she said made it difficult for her to fall asleep.

"But my condition progressed slowly. Now it has eased, and my sleep quality has also improved. I only need to see the doctor once every six months and the medication has been reduced to eight to nine tablets per day," she said.

The actress added that not a lot of people know much about dermatomyositis, and that she hopes that her experience would enable them to learn more about the disease.
