The Green Bean Shop — $1 nasi lemak stall closes 31 Jan

For the past 9 years, if you’d have ventured to 22 Sin Ming Road, you’d find The Green Bean Shop. Old flats and industrial buildings surround it, and the canteen’s ambience screams old-school nostalgia. But the days of serving this neighbourhood have come to an end— they will shut on 31 Jan this year.

The disheartening news came from a customer who posted on Facebook that their favourite nasi lemak place is closing down. It’s a loss for wallet-friendly food hunters as the Nasi Lemak here starts at S$1 and goes up to just S$2 for both the fish and chicken options.

On the table with the packets of nasi lemak, you can also find their array of kueh. It only adds to the old-school charm as these are traditional and local sweet bites. The Green Bean Shop also ran a special offer for the kueh where buying 4 would get you 1 free.

You could pick from options like Ang Ku Kueh (S$1.60), Rainbow Kueh Lapis (S$2) and Ondeh Ondeh (S$2.80)

They also had over 25 varieties of dessert at The Green Bean Shop. You could order their titular Green Bean Soup (S$1.80) or Chendol (S$2.80), both no-frills but enjoyable treats nonetheless.

It was both affordable and a pleasant, atmospheric eatery, so it’s a shame to see it go. The reason is apparently the high cost of manpower and difficulties from limitations set by MOM’s quota

As for what after closure, the owners are still innovating and thinking about their next steps. Let us all wish everyone at The Green Bean Shop all the best moving forward.
