Good Good Bird: Cheeky hipster stall with crispy fried chicken rice & porridge from just $3

I’m not one who usually travels to the East side of Singapore, but when I heard of Good Good Bird, I knew that I simply had to brave the long MRT and bus rides to get down to Bedok North Avenue 2.

The cheekily-named Good Good Bird is a stall within a Bedok coffeeshop specialising in fried chicken and chicken rice— don’t expect the usual roasted or steamed chicken rice plates, though, for this stall takes things to the next level.

The stall offers a zhng-ed up version of chicken rice from S$5, featuring flavoured rice accompanied with pickled vegetables, fried chicken, soup and an egg. You can even enjoy chicken porridge and various à la carte sides to go with your mains.

What I tried at Good Good Bird

The Fried Chicken Thigh Set (S$5.50) comes with a fried chicken thigh chopped into pieces, pickled vegetables, soup and your choice of either a braised egg or a curry egg.

The chicken thigh was remarkably crispy on the surface and juicy within. It had a sort of briny flavour that was slightly peculiar, but not too off-putting. The curry leaves on the surface were a nice touch, giving the meat a pack of additional flavour.

The rice was surprisingly aromatic— I could taste hints of garlic and ginger throughout. Even on its own, the rice had tons of flavour. The pickled vegetables were piquant and bright, making the entire dish even more exciting and robust.

I opted to get the curry egg over the braised egg and did not regret it at all— the egg had come served in a tub of curry sauce, which had a strong coconut fragrance and a mild yet noticeable spice. Pouring the curry sauce over the rice made it extra tasty and a little spicier, tying the entire dish together.

Finally, the bowl of soup on the side was generously filled with soft vegetables, providing the dish with a nice textural contrast. The soup was mild and refreshing, and tasted great when paired with the crunchier, saltier elements of the dish.

Overall, I really enjoyed the Fried Chicken Thigh Set at Good Good Bird, given how affordably priced yet generous in portions it was.

Moving on, the Chicken Porridge (S$3) instantly impressed me with its simple yet delectable presentation. Compared to regular chicken porridge, the version at Good Good Bird donned a slightly brown hue and was topped with a liberal amount of spring onions and fried shallots.

I couldn’t place a finger on what ingredients were in this bowl of porridge. It tasted different from the usual chicken porridge sold at regular hawker stalls, and had a very mild sweetness to it. The generous amount of fried shallots provided the porridge with a fragrant, slightly wok hei aroma. There were little bits of chopped chicken within too, making the dish a little more filling.

This was certainly the most unique chicken porridge I’ve had in Singapore. I found it to be very affordable and satisfying, especially given how generous the portion was.

Finally, I enjoyed some à la carte Fried Chicken Wings, priced at S$1.80 each. If you’re someone who loves your wings extra crunchy, Good Good Bird does not disappoint in this aspect— they even sprinkle on some additional fried bits to elevate this dish even further!

Each wing was super crispy on the outside, yet tender and juicy within. I did find that the batter had a bit of an odd taste, though— while I can’t fully describe it, it was somewhat yeasty with a slight acridness that I found strange. Despite that, I still thoroughly enjoyed the crispiness of the wings, with the neutral flavour of the flesh mitigating the strong taste from the batter.

Final thoughts

I was very much impressed with the food at Good Good Bird. Based on appearances alone, this humble stall blew me away with its simple yet immaculate presentation, and I loved how unique their take on chicken rice was.

The affordable price of each dish was definitely a strong selling point, and though I live far from Bedok, I know that I’d certainly love to head down for a meal whenever I am in the vicinity.
