Golden Globe Nominee Greta Gerwig’s Shoe Moments Through the Years
Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster film “Barbie” was recently nominated for nine 2024 Golden Globes, including for Best Director. This is her first time in the director category, where she will compete with Christopher Nolan for “Oppenheimer,” Martin Scorsese for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Celine Song for “Past Lives” and more.
In the past, Gerwig has received four Golden Globe nominations, including Best Screenplay for “Lady Bird” and Best Actress for “Frances Ha.”

Gerwig began her career in acting in the 2006 film “LOL” and went on to secure roles in films like “White Noise” and “Greenberg,” among others. Throughout her career, she attended many red carpet events, showcasing her whimsical style. When it comes to footwear, she often favors styles from Gucci, Prada, Aquazzura and Dior.
Ahead of the award ceremony on Jan. 7, FN is rounding up some of the thespian’s footwear moments on red carpets over the years.
2023 AFI Fest Screening of “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure”
While attending a 2023 screening of “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure,” Gerwig wore a pair of sleek black loafers hailing from Gucci. The loafers featured shiny patent leather uppers accompanied by silver horsebit hardware, a design staple for the Italian brand. Thick soles and short stacked block heels finished off the slip-on set, offering the silhouette a rugged appearance. The footwear silhouette is a popular one for Gucci.
Gerwig also wore a Gucci pajama-esque set crafted of red velvet featuring monogrammed detailing all throughout and ornate button closures.
“White Noise” Photocall, 2022
Updating the classic pump, Gerwig wore a pair of neutral heels to a “White Noise” photocall in 2022. The style featured see-through nude uppers with opaque capped toes. The neutral uppers were decorated with a sporadic black contrasting polka dot print and matching black trim. 3 to 4-inch stilettos finished off the set.
Accompanying her polka-dotted pumps, the director wore a classic black suit from Christian Dior featuring a tailored blazer and matching trousers.
31st Annual Producers Guild Awards 2020
Dainty and sleek, Gerwig attended the 2020 Producers Guild Awards in a pair of black lace pumps. The silhouette was akin to any other classic pump beyond its delicate black lacy uppers. This addition offered the footwear textural interest, setting the silhouette apart from its pointed-toe predecessors. Thin but sturdy stiletto heels rounded out the set, offering the director a subtle boost.
Alongside her lace pumps, Gerwig wore a suiting moment in black featuring a mini train on the back lined with red fabric. This look is similar to the one she wore during a “White Noise” photocall in 2022.
LACMA Art + Film Gala 2019
Sleek and strappy, Gerwig stepped out at the LACMA Art + Film Gala in 2019 in a pair of metallic sandals hailing from Christian Louboutin. The footwear included high-shine uppers accompanied by thick and sturdy straps across the tops of her feet and around her ankles, securing the heels in place. Thin 3 to 4-inch stiletto heels finished off the dazzling set.
Contrasting her metallic heels, Gerwig wore a hot pink beaded gown from Gucci. The Italian brand presented the event so it was only right that she sported Gucci’s wears.
New York, 2017
While out in the Big Apple, the creative donned a pair of pink crushed velvet Aquazzura Harlow platforms. The dainty style was comprised of striking textural crushed velvet uppers accompanied by flirty pearl appliques, gold stud detailing, peep toes, ankle straps, buckle closures and thick and lofty platform soles. 4 to 5-inch block heels finished off the set.
Worn alongside her pink platforms, Gerwig was outfitted in a silk pink and brown maxi dress featuring a whimsical floral print. Worn overtop, the director wore an oversized black satin blazer.
IMDb Interview, 2016
Offering her ensemble a touch of grunge for an IMDb interview in 2016, Geriwg wore a pair of black leather ankle-length booties. The footwear featured dramatic silver buckles that decorated the sleek black leather uppers, creating a drastic contrast. Thick straps kept the footwear in place, threaded through the aforementioned buckle closures. Equally thick stacked block heels rounded out the set.
Cozying up, Gerwig accompanied her booties with a neutral and thick knitted sweater maxi dress.
Pre-Oscar Dinner 2014
For Chanel’s Charles Finch pre-Oscar dinner in 2014, Gerwig wore a pair of Chanel heels in black crafted of a textural frayed cloth. The director’s footwear featured lace uppers accompanied by bow appliques fitted with the French fashion house’s logo. Additionally, the style included silver buckle closures, thin ankle straps and 2 to 3-inch stiletto heels.
Coordinating her dress to her footwear and vice versa, Gerwig wore a white and black maxi dress, likely from Chanel, crafted of an accordion-pleated fabric accompanied by black trim and a bow applique.

Much like her 2010 style, Gerwig wore a pair of platforms for the “Damsels In Distress” photocall except in an animal-printed burgundy style hailing from Prada. The footwear featured suede burgundy uppers accompanied by wild snakeskin-printed soles and coordinating heels that stood at around 3 to 4 inches in height. The footwear made for the perfect fall-centric addition to her wardrobe.
Accompanying her quirky footwear was an equally quirky Prada fall 2011 color-blocked dress featuring a whimsical grid print and large button closures all down the front.

Reaching new heights, Gerwig wore a pair of bright white platform heels in the peep-toe variety. The thespian’s footwear featured breezy open toes, patent leather uppers cast in a bright white hue and lofty platform soles that added height to the star’s look. 3 to 4-inch rhinestoned stiletto heels rounded out the set, providing Gerwig with both height and a touch of shine.
Accompanying her sky-high footwear, Gerwig was outfitted in a strapless white satin dress featuring a gathered bodice and a sleek skirt that stopped just above her knees.
Film Independent’s Independent Spirit Awards 2009
During the 2009 Independent Spirit Awards, Gerwig sported a pair of sleek and shiny black preppy ballet flats, a popular style of the time. The footwear was crafted of shiny patent leather uppers in black that transitioned into thick straps that sat across the tops of Gerwig’s feet, securing the pair in place. The flats were simple but effective, contrasting the brighter hue of her ensemble.
Speaking of ensembles, the director wore a bright red strapless dress featuring delicate gathering around the bodice.
