When country legends Garth Brooks And Trisha Yearwood joined in holy (and musical) matrimony, there was only one dessert they wanted to celebrate the day with, and it came from Yearwood’s family kitchen.

Through 17 seasons of her Emmy-winning cooking show, Trisha's Southern Kitchen (as well as her four cookbooks), Yearwood has proven that she’s not just a powerhouse vocalist, she’s also a force in the kitchen. In fact, Brooks proudly claims his favorite food to be pretty much “anything Mrs. Yearwood does.”

So, staying true to Yearwood’s signature Southern style of cooking, the cake the country duo chose for their 2005 wedding is a down-home classic. “It’s a sour cream pound cake with just a decorative frosting,” she told Good Morning America. The five-tiered showstopper made for their Oklahoma ceremony was dressed with white icing and bright red roses.

But, the true charm of this cake lies in its heritage—it's from the recipe box of Yearwood's mother, Gwen. Since her passing in 2011, the family recipe has gained an even deeper significance. “It’s a piece of history for us and it brings my mom back in the kitchen, too.” Yearwood shared.

What Is a Sour Cream Pound Cake?

The Oklahoma and Georgia-born artists needed a true Southern cake to celebrate their love, and sour cream pound cake was the perfect choice. The old-fashioned favorite is simple, comforting, and a symbol of Southern hospitality—the perfect choice for a private at-home ceremony.

Sour cream pound cake is a variation of a traditional buttery pound cake but with an enhanced texture and flavor. Sour cream’s high-fat content and acidity help tenderize the gluten in the flour, resulting in a pound cake that's both dense and delightfully soft.

Not only does the moisture from the sour cream keep the crumb lusciously moist for days, but it also adds a slightly tangy flavor that perfectly complements a sweet topping, whether that be a light lemon glaze or a fluffy vanilla buttercream. Because of the cake’s sturdiness, rich flavor, and extra-moist crumb, this classic cake is a brilliant option for a stacked wedding cake.

How to Make Garth Brooks And Trisha Yearwood’s Wedding Cake

Now that Brooks has opened up a bar on the Broadway strip of Nashville (Friends in Low Places Bar & Honky-Tonk), you can order an authentic slice of “G&T’s Wedding Cake” right off the bar menu. But, if you don’t want to travel all the way to Tennessee for a simple slice of sour cream pound cake, you don’t have to.

Our top-rated Sour Cream Pound Cake recipe is easy to make for any occasion, and it promises rave reviews every time. Best of all, it’s ready in just three steps.

To start, mix together flour, salt, baking soda, and ground mace or nutmeg in a large bowl. Next, beat together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs in one at a time, then mix in the vanilla.

Add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients alternately with sour cream, mixing until just incorporated. Pour the batter into a greased (or buttered) and floured pan, then use the back of a spoon to smooth out the top (the stiff batter won’t flatten out as it cooks). Bake the cake in a 350-degree F oven for 1 hour and 25 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out moist, but not wet.

Run a thin knife along the edge of the pan to loosen the cake. Cool in the pan on a wire rack for 20 minutes, then invert onto a wire rack and cool completely. To finish it off, give the pound cake a dusting of powdered sugar, a sweet glaze, or a rich buttercream frosting with bright red roses, just like G&T do it.
