Gao Yuanyuan reconciles with looks
4 June - While she was never fond of being known more for her beauty than her acting talent, Gao Yuanyuan recently admitted that she has learned to reconcile with herself.
Speaking to the media at the press conference of her new comedy movie, "Gold or S***", the 44-year-old model and actress stated, "I grew up in an environment where the word beautiful was not used in my family. But as I grew up, I was always told that I was pretty. I started to resist it. I felt that I had to prove that I could act in addition to being pretty."
Gao revealed that the reason why she chose to star in 2009's war-themed film "City of Life and Death" was because she wanted to challenge herself and show that she was more than a pretty face.
"But later on, I realised that maybe I had shortcomings. People saw my appearance first, which meant that I didn't do well enough in the other categories. I have gradually learned to get along with it, because whether it is in my appearance or my drama role, if it is pleasing to the audiences' eyes, what is wrong with it? This is a change for me, that is, to reconcile with myself," she explained.
"Gold or S***" tells the story of Wu Di (Hu Ge) who has been in Beijing for many years but has achieved nothing. Disheartened, he decides to return to his hometown, only to find that life in his hometown is not as smooth as he imagined. However, after he meets his high school classmate Feng Liuliu (Gao Yuanyuan), his life takes an unexpected turn.
