FIRST LOOK: Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep in Spielberg drama The Post
Months before director Steven Spielberg’s highly-anticipated adaptation of geeky sci-fi novel Ready Player One debuts next year, he’s first releasing a political drama that’s just in time for Oscar season. The Post tells the true story of the Washington Post’s struggles to publish the leaked Pentagon Papers in the 1970s.
At the time, the Nixon administration fought hard to prevent the newspaper from publishing these internal memos which essentially revealed that the US government had lied to its people about the country’s involvement in the Vietnam War.
Spielberg has gathered a killer cast for this Oscar contender: Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, Alison Brie, Sarah Paulson, Bruce Greenwood, Bradley Whitford, Carrie Coon and many others. Several of them can be seen in the first image from the film below:
Spielberg may be known for his VFX-laden blockbusters but he has also directed several iconic political and socially-conscious dramatic films such as the more recent Bridge of Spies, Schindler’s List and The Color Purple. This has shades of the 1976 classic drama All The President’s Men, which is also about another Washington Post expose.
Considering the current political climate in which the public demands complete transparency, this film’s subject matter will be highly prescient.
