First dibs: Rough Guys Coffee — Former Beng Who Cooks co-founder opens coffeehouse in Chinatown

Despite being described as rough guys, the people at Rough Guys Coffee are really amiable. Newly nested in one of the shophouses located in Chinatown, its modern signage and exterior stick out behind the backdrop of historical heritage.

The coffee place soft launched earlier in October 2022, and I was curious to see the space when pictures of the beautiful interior were flooding my social media feed.

I was first welcomed with a warm embrace of smiles from the baristas. An introduction to the both of them: One of the owners was a former barista at Kurasu Singapore and the other was a previous co-founder of Beng Who Cooks.

The coffee joint’s interior abides by a synonymous monochromatic theme; its minimalistic space comes with a clean and quiet ambiance. With several round tables scattered throughout the whole space, you could just pop by for a glass of coffee if you’re seeking shelter from a sweltering hot day.

Like most coffee houses, they share an open concept, with its counter situated right in front of the entrance. I got myself a cup of Iced White (S$7) and they shared a glimpse into their roasts with me. The brew uses washed beans from El Jaguar, with nuttier notes of dark chocolate.

If you are into fruitier tones, try their Kurasu Coffee, available in Hot (S$8.50) and Cold (S$9) options. They also have non-caffeinated options such as Matcha (S$6.50). But if you’re addicted to caffeine like me, you can opt for a shot of espresso at an additional cost.

If you’re feeling peckish and craving something to pair with your drink, Rough Guys Coffee has a selection of bakes from Yeastside Bakery. A minimal range of Banana Cakes are offered at S$6, while Brownies cost S$6.50 each. Savoury baked options like Scallion Scones (S$6.5) and Egg Mayo Focaccia (S$14) are supplied as well.

Their expected official launch date is yet to be confirmed, but most likely to occur in November 2022. Otherwise, from now till then, coffee lovers can still patronise the coffee joint to try out their different roasts!
