First dibs: 51 Tras — 3-in-1 Korean-inspired cafe with laksa quiches and mochi blondies

Tras Street welcomes yet another cafe to its midst with the opening of 51 Tras, a new concept housing dishes from Tigerlily Patisserie, SG Chee Cheong Fun by Ben Yeo and Francis Wong.

I initially struggled to locate 51 Tras due to its rather nondescript storefront, but was impressed by the grunge-y aesthetic of its interior. On a Friday afternoon, the space was almost fully packed, with comfortable seats and beautiful decorations.

Fans of Tigerlily Patisserie can look forward to trying out their pastries at 51 Tras, like the Laksa Quiche (S$8), a buttery pastry filled with coconut laksa custard, small pieces of prawns and fish cake. The Laksa Quiche tasted identical to a classic bowl of laksa, with a strong coconut milk fragrance and many bits of prawn and fish cake, which added texture to the quiche.

For the price, however, I think I’d rather get an actual bowl of laksa from a hawker centre, given how the taste was practically the same.

Another one of Tigerlily Patisserie’s pastries is the Muachee Mochi Blondie (S$8), a blondie containing a layer of mochi in the centre and topped with peanut crunch. This was easily my favourite dessert of the three dishes I tried at 51 Tras, as it was soft, crumbly and aromatic, with a nice chewy texture from the mochi filling.

51 Tras has cakes by Francis Wong, including Moon Walker (S$9), a spherical cake containing black sesame mousse, salted caramel and green tea crunch. I loved the nuttiness of the black sesame and the smooth texture of the cake, though I do find the price quite steep for its small size.

Other desserts by Francis Wong are Ring of Fire (S$16.50), made with mandarin orange sorbet, pistachio gelato and raspberry coulis, Blood Moon (S$16.50), made with blood orange espuma, orange compote, milk chocolate hazelnut gelato and space rocks, and Pacific Rim (S$9), containing mandarin yuzu mousse, milk chocolate curd and crunchy coconut.

If you seek something a little more savoury, go for the Aburi Chee Cheong Fun (S$14.50) from SG Chee Cheong Fun by Ben Yeo, which comes with an onsen egg, specialty sauces and shallots.

Quench your thirst with a drink like Honey Orange Chocolate (S$7), Mocha (S$7), Orange Espresso Soda (S$7) or Einspanner White (S$9).

Though I personally found the dishes to be on the pricier end, I found them to be innovative and creative, and enjoyed dining within the Instagrammable space.
