Famous Japanese drama 'Hana Yori Dango' returns this April with veteran actors

Do you still remember “Hana Yori Dango”, otherwise known as “Boys Over Flowers”? Even if you don’t, you would probably have seen other renditions of it, such as the Taiwan version “Meteor Garden” starring the Mandopop idol group F4 who established their group name from this drama, or the Korean version of the same name which stars Lee Min-ho.

After the two-part drama in 2005 and 2007, a movie in 2008 and multiple remakes both in Japan and internationally, the manga-turned-drama is finally making a comeback on 17 April in Japan with a brand-new season. Titled “Hana Nochi Hare HanaDan Next Season” or “Boys Over Flowers Season 2”, the drama continues the story at Eitoku Academy, 10 years after F4 graduated.

This latest instalment features new characters and stars young and budding actors: Hana Sugisaki as the female lead Oto Edogawa, Sho Hirano as the leader of Correct 5 (likened to F4) Haruto Kaguragi, and Taishi Nakagawa as Oto’s fiancé Tenma Hase, who is a popular student council president in a rival school.

Last week, it was announced that veteran actors Sumie Sasaki and David Ito will be reprising their roles as the chief maid of the Domyouji house Tama and secretary Nishida respectively.

Chief maid Tama had previously played a vital role in part 2 of the drama and the movie, supporting the progress of Makino and Domyouji’s relationship. In this new instalment, who knows what witty advice she will provide to Oto and Haruto?

Secretary Nishida has appeared in all the productions in the series, from the first part of the drama in 2005 to the movie in 2008. His involvement in this new love story is something to look forward to as well.

It seems the producers are not going to stop at these two characters, and will be adding more cast members from the prequels. Hands up if you hope to see Makino Tsukushi (Mao Inoue) and F4 (Jun Matsumoto as Tsukasa Domyouji, Shun Oguri as Rui Hanazawa, Shota Matsuda as Soujiro Nishikado and Tsuyoshi Abe as Akira Mimasaka) on the same screen once again!
