Family-friendly board and card games for cosy gatherings
Family card and board games are now better than ever!
A decade ago, Cards Against Humanity launched a highly successful Kickstarter campaign and generated an estimated 12 million dollars in revenue (an estimate was done in 2013) from its USD$25 (SGD33) card game. With new indie game makers hoping to be the next success story; old games reinventing themselves; and the whole home-confining global situation, card and board games are certainly here to stay.
We have shortlisted a couple of tried-and-played card and board games that are going to make your cosy gatherings that much more fun! Best of all, they will not put a huge dent in your wallet!
Avalon
For anyone familiar with Werewolves, this is a medieval version of it, where luck of the draw determines whether you are the villain or hero in this story. Work with fellow villains or heroes to distract or misdirect players into making choices that will fail or pass missions. This game involves a lot of careful deduction and talking over one another, and only the most cunning will prevail.
Catan 5th Edition Game
First published in 1995, Catan (previously known as The Settlers of Catan or simply The Settlers) won the “Game of the Century” award. As settlers, the aim of the game is to occupy as much of the island as possible via trading and building while avoiding the robber. Tactically place your settlements and roads, squabble or negotiate with your friends over resources and race to earn 10 points in order to emerge as winner!
Exploding Kittens Card Game
The most-backed project in Kickstarter history, Exploding Kittens is played by drawing cards from a faced-down deck until someone draws an Exploding Kitten. When that happens, that person “explodes” and is now out of the game. This process continues until there's only one player left, who wins the game. It sounds easy, until you include all the other cards you can play to diffuse the bombkitten and increase the chance of someone else getting the card.
Monopoly Classic Game
The good old Monopoly Classic almost needs no introduction. Buy, sell and collect rent your way to the top of the food chain, and possibly destroy your relationships with your family along the way! Just kidding, but it’s still a slow-paced yet fun game for a lazy Sunday afternoon with friends and family.
Monopoly Deal
If you’re looking for something that’s paced faster than the Monopoly Classic, the Monopoly deal is the way to go. Needing only 15 minutes to play, all you need to do is to collect three sets of property to win the game. Make sneaky deals and charge exorbitant rent to get your game on!
Origame Chope! Respect The Tissue Card Games
Caution: this card game is going to bring your heart rate up, almost as exciting as waiting for a table at the hawker centres during lunch time! Can you emerge the fastest among your friends and family?
So Cards: A Collection of Questions for Deeper Discussions
A great way to skip shallow conversations and dive straight into the deep end, So Cards get the conversation going from how are you to who are you. Draw a random card and start a conversation which could help you learn new things about old friends, family, and even your partner.
