Alexis Roberts' dad has a special holiday tradition for his daughter — hiding an ugly dress in one of her Christmas presents.

Speaking to PEOPLE, Roberts says the tradition, which she shared on TikTok, began in 2017. At the time, her dad, Mark Dupuy, 54, went to the dry cleaners to pick up clothes when he came across a rack of dresses people had left there for sale.

"He saw the bright pink, sparkly one, and knowing that I don't ever wear pink or sparkles thought it would be hilarious to gift it to me," Roberts, 27, says. "I had asked for luggage that year because I was studying abroad, so he hid the dress in my luggage."

"He's gotten me a dress every year since," she continues.

The Yorba Linda, Calif., native explains that while her dad follows through with the same tradition each year, he always finds a way to make it different — whether hiding the dress in another present or making it look like a normal gift until it's opened.

Once Roberts finds the dress, she has to try it on: "Everyone gets to react and laugh at how funny it looks."

"The first dress I ever got was the pink dress," she recalls. "That one definitely wasn't one of the worst. The pineapple dress was just so left field, it had everyone cracking up. The purple dress was the least flattering."

She says one of her favorite dresses was the one she received last year: a blue-and-white prairie dress. Her dad also included her cousins in the surprise and got them dresses as well.

Also on the top of her list is the green flowered dress she got this year. She says that when she went to try it on, it fit perfectly.

"It made me feel like a fairy princess," she says. "But it's still obnoxious because it was huge and I have no reason to wear it!"

Roberts also explains that she's never worn the dresses more than just on Christmas morning. She adds that she always ends up donating it after the holidays.

One of her favorite parts of this tradition is getting to look back on all the videos and photos. Whenever she does so, she remembers how much joy opening each one of the dresses gave her and her family.

"It's truly such a blessing to not only have my parents around, healthy and alive but to create memories with them is even more of a blessing," she says. "The holidays are the perfect way to practice being present with the ones you love and laugh with."

"It's truly the highlight of everyone's Christmas," she says.

By posting the video of the tradition on TikTok, she hopes to inspire people to create their family tradition. She adds: "I love that people found joy from my video, and I love even more that people might start this tradition in their own family."
