Derek Yee admits to fathering a two-year-old child
22 Jan – Hong Kong filmmaker Derek Yee recently admitted rumours that he is a father of a two year-old daughter.
As reported on Mingpao, the director, who appeared at the press conference for the 37th Hong Kong Film Awards recently, initially declined to elaborate more on the subject, but slowly began to share his personal life with the media.
Admitting that his daughter was born from his relationship with a non-showbiz woman, Derek admitted that he and his second wife, Mandy Law - whom he married in 2008 - are already divorced.
"I have some regrets when it comes to my relationship with my second wife. We were together for over 20 years, but we weren't able to make it forever. Sometimes you don't get closer to each other, but become more distant instead," he said.
Derek stated that it was hard for him to accept the fact that he is going to be a father at first, since he vowed not to have children after his mother passed away. However, the director finally came to the conclusion that he should just accept his fate and deal with it.
"Last month, I just turned 60. I have reached a lot of goals in this business, but I would still feel at loss. Maybe God gave me this responsibility so that I will gain new experience," he said.
Derek added that his daughter has taught him a lot of new things and that he has now learned to accept his new status.
On the other hand, when asked if his girlfriend is much younger than him, Derek responded, "To be continued in the next episode."
