Daniel Chan slammed by HK fans for "patriotic message"
8 Aug – Hong Kong singer Daniel Chan has recently suffered a backlash over condemning protesters who threw the Flag of China into Victoria Harbor.
As reported on Epoch Times, the issue sparked earlier this week, when the singer joined several other celebrities in posting an image of the Five-starred Red Flag on Instagram, and wrote, "Love patriotism, love Hong Kong. Against violence".
He also added the hashtag "I am not involved in the dispute".
Daniel was not the only Hong Kong celebrity who expressed such notion, as others including Jackie Chan and director Pang Ho Cheung also joined the campaign.
However, the said post was not received well by some Hong Kong fans, who took to the comments section to blast the singer for his supposed pro-China stance.
One netizen wrote, "Go back to Weibo to your mainland fans. Most people in Hong Kong will not support you!"
Another fan questioned Daniel's own understanding of the socio-political situation in Hong Kong, since the singer has been spending a lot of time performing in mainland China.
"Do you even know the pain experienced by Hong Kong people in the past couple of months? Why do you step on the Hong Kong people at this stage?" the fan wrote.
Some even went on to share photos of them destroying Daniel's music album to show their anger towards the singer.
On the other hand, the singer still won support from others, with one fan saying, "Seeing so many people scolding him, I can only say that you either don't agree with the previous sentence or don't agree with the latter sentence. As a Chinese, if you don't agree with the previous sentence, then you are not worthy of being Chinese; as a person, if you don't agree with the latter sentence, you are a [bad person]."
