Cya Liu hopes to win Best Actress at HKFA

13 Jul - Although she is facing tough competition from seasoned actresses, Cya Liu recently admitted that she has high hopes of winning Best Actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards.

In a recent interview on Mingpao, the actress, who is nominated for her role in Cheang Pou-Soi's film, "Limbo", stated that she gave the movie her best performance, as if it would be her last.

"Even if it becomes the final film in my career, I would think it will be worth it. My character Wang Tao is different from other characters I played. She has no social identity and doesn't rely on anybody to exist in this world," she said.

Cya, who admitted that she waited 13 years to finally become a lead actress, said that winning an award would help her get more recognition from the public, which in turn will give her more opportunities.

"I came to Beijing alone when I was 18 to get opportunities and waited for seven years without any job. I nearly returned to Hunan, but was lucky to get "So Young". But it took four more years before the film came out, and I had to make small budget films to make ends meet. I nearly quit again. But I persisted," she said.

As for the other contenders, Cya admitted that it will be tough since both Sandra Ng and Gong Li are already award winners, while Chrissie Chau gave a great performance in "Madalena".

"I also love Anita Mui, so when I watched "Anita", I naturally got led by Louise Wong's performance. It's not easy playing a public figure," she added.

It is noted that Cya has already won Best Actress for her performance in "Limbo" at the Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards.

The 2022 Hong Kong Film Awards will be held on 17 July.
