Couple Hires Team of Divers to Search for Wedding Ring Lost in Lake 25 Years Ago

On Friday, May 24, a couple was reunited with the wedding ring they lost more than 25 years ago, thanks to the help of a Lake Hartwell diving team, according to local news outlets WYFF 4, Fox Carolina and WDBJ 7.

David and Lisa Allen were “college sweethearts” who got married in 1990. But years later, in 1998, Lisa filed for divorce because of David's alcohol abuse.

While in recovery the next year, David was sitting on his brother's dock near the South Carolina lake when the gold ring slipped off his finger.

"It bounced off the dock and it fell into the water,” David recalled to WYFF 4.

When the couple reunited decades later in 2023, they decided to go on the search for David’s missing ring.

The Allens recruited the Lake Hartwell Divers — owned by Jeremy Robinson — and their ring was found in the water after four days of searching.

"It means so much to him and his family," Robinson told WYFF 4. "So, it meant a lot to us to help him get it back."

In a video shared by WYFF 4, Robinson is shown telling the happy couple about his discovery. "I got your ring," he tells David, who responds in disbelief, "What?" When the diver repeats the good news, David replies, "No, really?"

Robinson has been recounting the story on the public Facebook group Lake Hartwell Divers, where the company writes, "Our mission is to provide professional, skilled, efficient and effective search and rescue services. We are dedicated to supporting our community by providing life vests to children, search and rescue assistance to local Fire, EMS, Law Enforcement, assisting in the recovery of lost items on upstate lakes, and promoting water safety."

Lisa left a comment on one of Robinson’s posts, expressing her appreciation. "Jeremy, you were amazing and your hard work is beyond anything we could have imagined. Thank you so much for finding our ring," she wrote.

While chatting with Fox Carolina, Lisa and David opened up about their second shot at love. "We both had a lot to learn and I think that it's just come to that point in time where we've learned all the things, and we get a chance to do it correctly," Lisa said.

Meanwhile, David sees the discovery as a metaphor: "Before the ring went in, I wasn't the husband I should have been. And that ring got baptized basically and I'm a different person today. It's a new life, it’s like being born again."

In a similar story back in January, a South Carolina woman was reunited with her wedding ring after it slipped off while she was putting her recyclables in a bin at a local recycling center. The supervisors and crew members at the center saved the day by sorting through the bin and locating the white gold ring.
