This New Coffee Table Book Chronicles the Rise of Italy’s Most Storied Yacht Maker

First it was Riva, now it’s Benetti: Assouline just released another luxe monograph dedicated to a renowned Italian yacht maker.

Titled simply Benetti, the new coffee table book spans 292 pages and includes more than 200 beautiful illustrations. Penned by noted marine journalist Kevin Koenig, the tome is a tribute to Benetti’s rich heritage, exceptional craftsmanship, and design prowess.

Founded in 1873 by Lorenzo Benetti, the Italian outfit is one of the oldest and most prolific yards in the biz. It has delivered more than 420 yachts over the past 150-odd years, making it the biggest builder in the world. The new hardcover tracks the development of the Benetti fleet, from the very early wooden sailing ships to the five massive gigayachts at the bleeding edge of marine innovation. The yard now has no less than six lines, including B.Now, B.Yond, Class, Oasis, B.Century, and Custom.

One highlight of the book is Nabila. Launched in 1980, the 282-footer was the largest and most extravagant superyacht on the water at that time. Unfortunately, the vessel was built at a loss and nearly pushed Benetti into bankruptcy. The founder of Azimut Yachts, Paolo Vitelli, decided to buy the struggling yard in 1985. Shortly after, Azimut|Benetti became the first private group in the yachting sector.

The book also covers the trio of 350-foot gigayachts (Luminosity, Lana, and IJE) that were delivered in 100 days in 2020, shattering Benetti’s previous 328-foot maximum length and setting a new record for the industry. In addition, readers can peruse breathtaking vessels built for celebrities such as legendary singer David Bowie and former Swedish footballer Zlatan Ibrahimović or learn more about the new wave of revolutionary hybrid designs.

The French publisher says the pages include never-seen-before photographs and an array of interesting anecdotes. (Think of it as an exclusive behind-the-scenes guide.) You’ll also find details regarding the designers and naval architects who have partnered with the yard, as well as information on the A-listers who have commissioned vessels.

Benetti is housed in a stylish slipcase that protects it from wear and tear. Available in the States from January 30, the book will set you back $195. Alternatively, you can pick it up in Europe for €195. Well, that’s certainly cheaper than a multimillion-dollar Benetti.
