The City Girls' JT Brings Mainstream Visibility To Alt Black Girls

Being part of the beauty community means embracing the uniqueness of others, from style aesthetics to cultural influences. So, we're giving flowers to the alt-Black girls who aren't afraid to be themselves while leading the pack in creative beauty and style looks.

An alt-Black girl is someone who leans into grunge vibes, playing into goth and rock style choices with a personalized spin . These girls, such as our bae Aliyah Bah, curate looks, music and beauty aesthetics that go against the grain of mainstream beauty standards. One woman in particular is rapper JT, notably known for her rise as one half of The City Girls and her emergence as someone to watch in the beauty space.

From her performance looks to her personal style posts on Instagram, JT flawlessly reinforces representation for Black women within alt-beauty. Aside from her signature dark brown over-lined lips, she is no stranger to fearlessly trying new looks like colorful wigs, faux septum piercings and rock-inspired outfits as seen in her editorial shoot for Mowalola x Beats. The campaign imagery shows the rapper wearing a colorful wig that incorporates wires flowing from the back of her head as hair strands. This powerful image not only stamps JT as a fearless alt IT girl but, more importantly, gives visibility to a community of girls that are often misunderstood or overlooked.

From star nipple covers peeking out from a bralette to tall black platforms and fishnet stockings, her style aesthetic screams unique, modern rockstar. She sums up her style in her single "No Bars," where she describes herself as a "hood b-tch dressed like a weirdo," playing into the fact that mainstream media does not understand her style choices, a common occurrence in the alt-Black girl community.
