Chanel Fall/Winter 2023 spotlights the camellia as an everlasting symbol for the house

Chanel's creative director Virginie Viard wanted this collection to be delicate and in motion.

Creative Director Virginie Viard knows what a Chanel wearer wants, and she's referencing the maison's symbolic design flower – the winter flower camellia – for her Fall 2023 ready-to-wear collection.

“The camellia is more than a theme, it’s an eternal code of the House,” explains Virginie Viard, before confiding, with a smile: “I find it reassuring and familiar, I like its softness and its strength”.

You can spot the beautiful flower in little, joyful touches, blooming over pockets, jackets, buttons, and in the suspended romanticism of the prints.

Virginie Viard wanted this collection to be delicate and in motion. “The energy of the merry-go-round of wooden horses that provides the setting for Inez & Vinoodh’s film, with actress Nana Komatsu as the heroine, gave me the idea for the Bermuda shorts suits and the asymmetries,” she reveals.

The asymmetry of the coats, the slits in the dresses, the tilted front of the Bermuda shorts suits, the flounces, the revealing backs, the beads and sequins, the fantasy threads in the knitwear, all bear witness to the momentum carrying the collection.

Celebrities in the front row

Blackpink's Jennie was among the many celebrities who arrived for the maison's fashion show in Paris. She wore a simple but timeless Chanel jumpsuit and tied her hair in a braid. The longtime Chanel ambassador completed the look with a purple camellia belt, which points to the show's reference.

Jennie posed with actress Penelope Cruz and watched the show alongside Park Seo-joon, Liu Wen, singer FKA Twigs, and model Park Soo-joo to name a few.
