Carina Lau laughs off rumours that she is 58
2 May – Carina Lau has recently laughed off speculations that she is older than she claimed to be, following a previous statement made by Mary Jean Reimer about meeting her when she was a child.
As reported on Mingpao, the speculations sparked recently, when Reimer, who saw an article about Carina's love for mountain hikes, took to social media to express her surprise that the actress is only 52-years-old.
Reimer, who was born in 1964, stated that she saw Carina for the first time at director Lau Fong Gong's home when she was 12, and remembered that Carina was already an adult at the time.
Netizens speculated that if they are to calculate Carina's real age by Reimer's memory, the two of them would have met in 1976 when Carina had already joined showbiz. It also means that the actress should be 58-years-old this year.
When asked about it recently, Carina stressed that she is 52, since she was born on 8 December 1965.
"I do think Mary Jean is a good person and would have all her information, being the lawyer that she is. But should I be 58 according to her calculation, my mum must have given birth to me when she was 15, since she was born in 1944," she said.
As to Reimer's remark that she was 12 when she saw a grown Carina at director Lau's house, Carina said that she was 17 when she went to Lau's housing company.
"I came to Hong Kong in 1980, and applied for a training class in 1982," she said.
When asked if she wants Reimer to verify it, Carina said that that should not be necessary.
"You could just check online. My mother was born in 1944. But in conclusion, I am healthy, happy, and growing old. I am not afraid of getting old. I expect to become an old woman with white hair and wrinkles," she said.
Carina stated that she is not that familiar with Reimer, and concluded that the former actress might have identified the wrong person in the past.
