Candlelight concert: What I think of the 100 Years of Warner Bros concerto at Chijmes

Here in Singapore, I was lucky to attend a live, multi-sensory concert titled, Candlelight: 100 Years of Warner Bros at Chijmes Hall.

Warner Bros. Studio turned 100 years on 4 April 2023 and their milestone birthday was celebrated in Asia Pacific via several activations such as live concerts, toys, apparel, and collectibles. Across Asia, retailers and suppliers in the home and apparel space have partnered with Warner Bros. including Popmart’s blind box figures and Tom & Jerry mashup toys from Soap Studio. Skechers will launch an apparel range in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Warner Bros. was founded by Albert, Sam, Harry, and Jack Warner and incorporated on 4 April 1923. Today, the studio is home to one of the most successful collections of brands and series in the world such as Looney Tunes, Friends, Game of Thrones, DC and Wizarding World.

Here in Singapore, I was lucky to attend a live, multi-sensory concert titled, Candlelight: 100 Years of Warner Bros at Chijmes Hall. Organised by Warner Bros. Discovery Global Themed Entertainment and Fever, an entertainment discovery platform, the concert featured music from award-winning films such as The Lord of The Rings, Batman and Harry Potter as well as unforgettable television shows from the Warner Bros. library including Friends in a one-of-a-kind musical experience taking place in breathtaking candlelit settings.

What I thought of the concert

Formerly a girls' school known as the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus Middle Education School, Chijmes now operates as a food and beverage and entertainment venue for locals and visitors to gather. It was chosen as the venue for Candlelight: 100 Years of Warner Bros, and I thought the organiser perfectly understood the assignment – it was an intimate setting, with the beautiful handcrafted stained glass windows illuminated by hundreds of flameless candles on the floor.

The concert was about 65 minutes and was performed by Vocalise String Quartet, consisting of musicians on two violins, one viola, and one cello. Unlike a full orchestra, a classical string quartet highly tests the capabilities of a composer to create and render a musical form.

And boy did the quartet deliver!

The quartet opened with the track from The Wizard of Oz - Over the Rainbow (1939), followed by Casablanca - As Time Goes By (1942) and Singin’ in the Rain (1952). It was like walking down memory lane for me, as hearing those songs again after so long brought back wonderful memories.

As the night progressed, I sensed that the quartet was having a thrilling time because there were some outstanding moments for me: the arrangement of the title track Purple Rain (1984) and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - Hogwarts’ Anthem (2005) were particularly skilful and uplifting.

I also liked that the lighting in the hall was subdued, as that eased me into a calm and relaxed mood to enjoy the evening's offering, particularly after a long day of work. My visual and aural senses were definitely heightened throughout the whole duration. At times, I was eager to get up from my seat to jive along!

I'd definitely recommend going to a session with friends or loved ones under the gentle glow of candlelight and just soaking in the experience.

While the Candlelight: 100 Years of Warner Bros event has ended, there are other exciting and upcoming sessions I'd recommend:
