Cafe popular among local artists & gig-goers, Strait Jacket, has closed its physical outlet

If you keep up with the local arts scene, or if you’re a frequent gig-goer, you may be familiar with the cafe, Strait Jacket. Unfortunately, it has closed its physical outlet on 1 Oct 2023.

Known for its strong support of local artists and musicians, Strait Jacket has made a name for itself in Singapore’s niche arts scene. The eccentric cafe was located at 48 Haji Lane, in the bustling Bugis vicinity. Stepping within the space would expose visitors to walls covered in bold pieces and street art-style posters.

Strait Jacket opened its doors just 5 months ago on 6 May 2023, where it would serve assorted cafe beverages and thick, fluffy pancakes to customers. What made it stand out from most other cafes was the fact that sometimes, artists would sell their merchandise in the store, making it the perfect spot for art lovers and gig-goers to get together for a quick bite within a welcoming space.

The cafe first announced its potential closure on 19 Sep 2023 via an Instagram post, though details were vague — the post simply read that their physical store “might close” by the end of the month. Strait Jacket proceeded to confirm the closure a week later on 26 Sep 2023, where they thanked their customers, friends and local brands and arts who have supported them during their journey.

While there’s no word on whether Strait Jacket will return with a new physical outlet, this may not be the end, as they teased in their Instagram post that they will “come back even bigger in the future”.

Hopefully, this won’t be the last time that Strait Jacket makes its mark in Singapore. We wish the owners of Strait Jacket success in their future endeavours and perhaps we will get to have their delightful drinks, fluffy pancakes and crispy waffles again very soon.
