Build your own omakase menu from just $1 at JUNRYO
Tucked away in Orchard Plaza is a little sushi place called JUNRYO. The place is tiny, with 8 pax counter seating and the decor is almost austere. They’re offering a “design your own omakase” menu with sushi selections starting from as little as S$1.
JUNRYO is opened by the same people behind another hole-in-the-wall eatery called Yuta, located on the same level. Yuta offers affordable omakase that strikes a balance between a comfortable price point and quality, and they have extended that same mentality to JUNRYO.
Manned by Chef Samuel Lau who is a sushi chef with over a decade of experience, this place is perfect for sushi aficionados. Diners can expect expertly prepared fish, freshly flown in from Japan, atop perfectly moulded beds of sushi rice. JUNRYO focuses almost entirely on sushi, so options for cooked mains are limited – if you prefer that, check out Yuta instead.
How the “build it yourself” omakase concept works is that you can choose from a menu of about 40 different varieties of sushi, which are then prepared on the spot and served to you omakase-style.
There’s no minimum number you have to order, and the most affordable options are as low as S$1, which includes options like natto, tamago, inari, ebi gunkan and tako wasabi gunkan.
The most premium of the sushi options go up to S$10 which are things like uni and otoro, but there are plenty of good options below that. Salmon belly, ikura and hamachi are priced at S$3 a piece, which is honestly quite a steal in this economy.
Take note that JUNRYO only accepts walk-ins and only has seating for 8 pax, so unless you’re prepared to stand in line for as long as an hour, it’s best to go early before opening.
