Southern California residents are sharing the lengths they’ve gone to protect their homes amid the current devastating fires. From distributing pool water via fire hose to using a sprinkler system on the roof, longtime homeowners made preparations that contributed to saving their houses—and they hope these methods can help their communities be better prepared as well. One family is even open to offering a live demonstration of what they did after sharing their story on TikTok.
“There is no doubt in my mind that this generator, pump, pool, sprinkler and fire hose contributed to saving our family home,” the TikTok account Golling Group shared in the caption of a video showcasing how they tested those items to cover their property with water in August 2024.
The user went on to explain that their family ran the equipment for “about 10 hours over the course of 2 days,” draining their pool and their neighbor’s pool. They added: “Without this, there would be no more house and possibly no more neighbors. Were we lucky? Extremely. Were we prepared? Yes. Were there things we would have done differently? Absolutely.”
They recommend everyone follows suit, especially pool owners. “If you don’t have a pool there are solutions for water storage,” they added, noting they used the “budget friendly and easy to operate” equipment at other nearby houses, too. “It was a challenge to put them all out but we did the best we could with buckets and their pools. If they had this, we would have been 100x more efficient.”
For anyone interested in a live demonstration, the account has set up a website directing people to a survey. “We will gather a list of those interested and make sure everyone has an opportunity to get one to protect their home,” they wrote. "I wish I had more videos from it in action on the scene. But, understandably so, we were very occupied."
