British Independent Film Awards: ‘American Honey’ & ‘Under The Shadow’ Glow – Full Winners List
UPDATE: Andrea Arnold’s American Honey scooped four prizes at the British Independent Film Awards tonight in London. Those include the top nod for Best British Independent Film as well as Best Director for Arnold, Best Actress for breakout Sasha Lane and the Outstanding Craft prize for Robbie Ryan’s cinematography.
A road movie about law-breaking teenagers chasing the American Dream, American Honey co-stars Shia LaBeouf. The pic was shot in the U.S. Midwest and won huzzahs in Cannes where it debuted last May, taking the Jury Prize. That set a trifecta for Arnold who had previously won that honor with Red Road and Fish Tank. A24 took Stateside rights and Focus acquired key international territories during the festival.
The film will be screened in 25 Vue, Odeon and Everyman cinemas across the UK on December 11, as the first in the BIFA Independents screening series supported by the BFI.
Another Cannes title, I, Daniel Blake, led the nominations going into the evening. The Palme d’Or winner from Ken Loach left the ceremony with two prizes. One for Best Actor Dave Johns and one for Most Promising Newcomer in the form of Hayley Squires.
Babak Anvari’s Under The Shadow, the Farsi-language thriller that’s also the UK’s entry for the Foreign Language Oscar category this year, scared up three awards total. Hot new talent Anvari won Best Screenplay and the Douglas Hickox Award for Best Debut Director. His nine-year-old star Avin Manshadi was named Best Supporting Actress.
Brett Goldstein was named Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Adult Life Skills and the film’s writer Rachel Tunnard won the inaugural Best Debut Screenwriter award.
Best International Independent Film wen to Barry Jenkins’ awards-season favorite Moonlight.
