Bran Stark might be one of the unluckiest characters in Game of Thrones so far, but Isaac Hempstead Wright – who plays the character in the show – thinks Bran isn’t as helpless as fans think.

Hempstead Wright recently spoke to Yahoo Lifestyle Singapore about the upcoming season of the hit HBO show and spoke at length about his character.

The 18-year-old actor is a pretty big fan of the series, having caught the Game of Thrones concert in the US and keeps himself updated about all the most recent fan theories.

He is especially invested in one theory – he believes that Bran could have been the three-eyed raven all along. The three-eyed raven, played in season six by Swedish actor Max von Sydow, was the last of the Greenseers, who could see into the future and used that power to guide others.

“I prefer that kind of idea that there’s this whole predetermined, weird paradoxical cycle that Bran in the future is going back [in time] to make sure young Bran had all these dreams and went up north so that he could do [the things that Bran has accomplished since getting injured],” the actor said.

He added, “He’s kind of been guided and predestined ever since he fell off. Bran lost more than just his legs after that fall. He lost his entire family, because they all had to leave without him. He lost a huge chunk of himself, and I like the idea that in the future he’s being guided to regain that through a different aspect of his personality. It’s the idea that Bran has basically been working to recover what he’s lost.”

Hempstead Wright also believes that Bran plays a crucial role in the upcoming seasons.

“Bran has got all these really really important information that he needs to impart – the true parentage of Jon Snow, the origin of the White Walkers which could be unbelievably useful in trying to work out how to defeat them – so Bran needs to keep a very level head and make sure he fulfils the destiny he’s had ever since he fell out of the window, to become the three-eyed raven and hopefully to save the day,” he explained.

The actor continued, “He hasn’t really got any designs on going back and just say ‘Oh, I’m just going to hang out with my family again’, he’s got a higher purpose which he understands.”

“He knows that the most important thing for him is to follow his predetermined fate, and that’s what he’s come to do.”

At the same time, Hempstead Wright also dismissed another prevalent theory that Bran Stark was the original Bran the Builder, who was responsible for erecting the Wall.

The actor said, “I’m not sure about the Bran the Builder theory. I know we can play fast and loose with the time ‘difference’, but I think that would really require some really weird type of acting.”

“It wouldn’t make sense anymore,” he said.

GAME OF THRONES Season 7 premieres same time as the US on July 17 at 9am, exclusively on HBO (StarHub TV Ch 601), with a same day primetime encore at 9pm. Also available on HBO On Demand (StarHub Ch 602) and HBO on StarHub Go.
