Local production Already Famous has hit the million-dollar mark at the box office.

As of Monday, the feature film, which sneaked on 24 November and opened officially on 1 December, grossed S$1.04 million at the box office, announced Scorpio East Pictures, Huat Films and Cathay-Keris Films in a joint statement on Tuesday.

Already Famous, the directorial debut of local actress Michelle Chong, tells the story of a Malaysian girl (played by Chong) who sets out to fulfill her dream of becoming a popular star in Singapore.

In her journey to superstardom, she meets a shy coffee shop assistant named Ah Seng who helps her achieve her dream.

Chong, best known for her trademark comic personas on Channel 5's comedy series The Noose, said in a statement she was "humbled by the incredibly warm reception".

"I am happiest when people say they are touched, inspired or just entertained by my movie. The touching box office figures are the icing on the cake and I take this as an encouraging sign that I can continue making my second film," added the 34-year-old, who earlier revealed plans to release the movie in Malaysia in January.

Strong local support for the film was already apparent during its opening weekend.

The comedy clawed in a healthy S$415,000, ahead of animated film Arthur Christmas (S$178,000) and period film White Vengeance (S$55,000).

Produced by Huat Films, Already Famous, which also stars Taiwan actor Alien Huang, is currently showing in Cathay Cineplexes, Golden Village, Shaw and We Cinemas.
