The Double D's are two DJs in Singapore making a name for themselves as the new Muttons, the hilarious radio duo Justin Ang and Vernon Anthonisz.

During an interview at Gloria Jean's Coffees in Tanjong Pagar, the duo who was sporting hairdos a la English soccer player, David Beckham, met up with Yahoo! Singapore on Monday to discuss the show - "The Double D Show" - and its reception.

Divian takes off his aviators breaking out of his cool biker swag and says, “Yes we are the Muttons of this generation because we can definitely relate better to today’s younger generation.”

Since local English radio station 987FM churned out “The Double D Show” on Valentine’s Day, Divian Nair, 26, and Dee Kosh (real name Darryl Koshy), 25, have been getting love on air from youngsters for their mindless pranks, similar to what the Muttons are famous for.

"The Double D Show" is aired every weeknight from 8pm to 12pm, right after the Mutton's "On the Move" programme scheduled just before them - from 4pm to 8pm.

In their weeknight show, The Double D's, as they are called, have poked fun at racially-sensitive topics such as ridiculous Malay colloquial terms: “A’ah siol” and “Ewah ewah” – which are also Dee Kosh’s famous taglines.

According to Dee Kosh, who is also a YouTube personality, “Singaporeans just love to laugh at ourselves and the stupid things that we normally do.”

Divian adds, “Especially when everything is so American-ised, Singaporeans are looking out for more local content – things that reflect us as Asians.”

The two are also trying hard to marry radio and social media content together, which makes them edgier than the Muttons, who have been around for eight years and whose show on the same station comes ahead of The Double Ds.

The pair does so by extending The Double D experience to online video platform YouTube, where they post their viral videos.

The Double Ds are famous for their mindless pranks on other radio DJs and their prank on DJ Sonia was the most popular.

Packaging Youtube Star Dee Kosh

Divian credits their social media advantage to Dee Kosh for his keen eye on potential viral content.

Dee Kosh, who is also a YouTube star, has over 35,000 video subscribers and his videos have garnered more than 9 million views, with his most famous video being the “Singaporean Clubber” video and he also has a considerable following on Facebook with over 30,000 page likes.

With three years’ experience as a DJ, Divian admits that he is the big brother of the two when it comes to work. “During the few years since Dee Kosh came back from the Philippines, he has been able to pick out the topics that make Singaporeans tick, and I help him package all his ideas and translate them into what’s good for radio,” he says.

Dee Kosh, who grew up in the Philippines with his Singaporean parents, never imagined he’d be a radio DJ, and even considered returning after serving his national service in the city-state. However, things took a positive turn after his series of video podcasts on YouTube about life on the island quickly gained a following.

During the “Harlem Shake” craze, The Double Ds dropped by Singapore Polytechnic to record their Harlem Shake video with students, which earned over 250,000 views.

Subsequently, their famous prank videos on other 987fm DJs have also been getting an average of 10,000 views.

Dee Kosh's entry into the world of radio came after his first attempt failed. In early 2012, he auditioned for a co-hosting spot in 987fm’s “The Rude Awakening” with DJ Rosalyn Lee, but the spot was taken up by Fly Entertainment artiste Bobby Tonelli. Still, he got an offer to host “Say It With Music” instead, which he did from April last year to January this year, before the pair-up with Divian in their show.

Being in radio has been “a lot of hard work” for Dee Kosh who is still learning the tools of the radio trade, but the DJ newbie is also enjoying his “dream” job, particularly while spending time with Divian.

The Double Ds visited several tertiary schools to "drop" the Harlem Shake with the students. Their visit to Singapore Polytechnic was the most popular on Youtube.

The Double D bromance

Divian and Dee Kosh say that they have definitely grown closer to each other since “The Double D Show” began.

“We both live in Woodlands and Divian would fetch me to work and back,” says Dee Kosh, explaining their “bromance”.

“The thing about us is that we can laugh at the same things without having to point it out and I can never ask for a better mentor than him [Divian] through this radio crash course,” says the radio newbie.

The Double Ds, who have a habit of laughing simultaneously, say that they are a lot funnier off air, when they are not restricted by the media boundaries that govern what can or cannot be said on their radio show.

“But we enjoy the challenge of making our content hilarious within such media boundaries,” says Divian, who enjoys making people laugh and would do it for free.

Their contrasting family backgrounds are also a reason why the two make a good pair.

Coming from “a typical Singaporean family” that drove him to pursue a high-paying job, Divian revealed that he broke out of the mold after realising his passion for radio-hosting. In contrast, Dee Kosh had no such conflicts as he came from a carefree family that instead focuses on “enjoying life and loving what you do”.

Opposites do attract and for The Double Ds, it has created great synergy that has led to social media buzz.

The pair may have been a long way from replacing the infamous Muttons, whose famous phone pranks on radio show “Muttons on the Move” have earned them 30,000 Facebook followers, but The Double Ds’ unrestrained zest proves this goal could be possible.

“Muttons! Watch out!” jokes Divian.
