New Restaurant: Hummerstons

Buzz: A weeks-old restaurant in the ever-popular Robertson Quay area that serves up hearty, home-style fare that's all about unfussy, comforting eats.If you were wondering about the name, the inspiration is chef-owner Bouk's mom. (It's her maiden name.)
Vibe: It may be located at Robertson Walk, but the fact that it's tucked away on the second floor keeps it hidden from prying eyes. It's a minimal yet cosy space, so it makes for a good first date spot or just an easy meal with friends.
Food: Brace yourself for a plethora of western offerings such as smoked duck quesadilla ($26), a namesake beef burger with Applewood-smoked bacon, caramelised onions, tomatoes and greens in a house-made bun ($24), and Prawn Pavarotti - sherry cream tossed farfalle, hot peppers, spinach and tomatoes with prosciutto-wrapped prawns ($35), as well as poutine with a variety of toppings ($11 upwards).
Purists might balk at anything but the traditional recipe of French fries topped with fresh cheese curds and smothered in gravy. But we daresay the Montreal ($19) is a delicious variation of skin on, hand-cut fries with roasted mushrooms, foie gras and rich jus, topped with grated Emmental cheese.
Drinks: Aside from beers like Titje and Warsteiner on tap ($8 upwards), they also do cocktails including 3G -St. Germain elderflower liqueur, gin, Domaine de Canton ginger liqueur ($25) and Kumquatroska - fresh kumquats muddled with vodka and brown sugar ($14).
Why you'll be back: Having recently started their lunch service two weeks ago, they'll also be introducing brunch this weekend. Even if you're not Canadian, you'll appreciate the poutine (who doesn't love fries?) and laidback vibe. - Jalean Wong
