As Virginie Viard prepares to part ways from Chanel—marking an end to her five-year tenure as artistic director—the path forward for the storied fashion house now seems ripe for reinvention and creative interpretation. And at Monday night’s Chanel-hosted dinner at the Tribeca Film Festival, stars like Blake Lively and Katie Holmes appeared to have gotten the memo.

The actors showed up to the event in two wildly different takes on the classic Chanel uniform.

For Lively’s part, the It Ends With Us star went the logomania route, plucking a flashy black suit from Viard’s Spring 2024 ready-to-wear runway. Both the double-breasted blazer and the wide-leg pants were covered in painted pink flowers and a swirling print of multicoloured double C’s. To finish off the look, she added a pair of black embellished sandals and a matching embroidered clutch bag, as well as huge diamond earring studs and an array of rings.

As for Holmes, the Dawson’s Creek alum presented an elegant take on the sheer trend that has been dominating street and red-carpet style for seasons now. She opted for a sparkly lacy black cardigan and a matching lace maxi skirt, both of which featured large gaps in the lace that showed off slivers of skin underneath. Holmes made the ensemble a bit more modest by pairing it with a plain black scoop-neck tank top. For good measure, she added some strappy black heeled sandals, a black velvet rectangular clutch, stud earrings, and a chain necklace.

Chanel confirmed Viard’s exit last week, saying in a statement that she leaves 'after a rich collaboration of five years as artistic director of fashion collections, during which she was able to renew the codes of the house while respecting the creative heritage of Chanel, and almost 30 years within the house.' While a new artistic director has not yet been named, there are rumours that Celine’s Hedi Slimane is a top contender for the position.
