This season’s couture shows in Paris brought a jolt of energy to fashion’s oldest artistic showcase. There were new approaches to classic elements of couture, like more playful embroidery and complex, sculptural draping. Several collections incorporated elements of sportswear and streetwear, which, in many cases, was a nod to the Olympic games that will kick off in the city on July 26th.

At Dior, Maria Grazia Chiuri did just that with Grecian jersey dresses and embroidered bodysuits. Meanwhile, Demna offered a couture take on hoodies, t-shirts, tracksuits, and denim at Balenciaga. On the eve of his 90th birthday, Giorgio Armani went all in on elegance in a pearl-themed collection that included beautiful tailoring and velvet. Daniel Roseberry’s collection for Schiaparelli was titled "The Phoenix," which featured an opening look with wing-shaped shoulders adorned with 3-D chrome embroidery. There were feats of construction with muslin draping and layering at Thom Browne. Nicolas Di Felice, who is the Creative Director of Courrèges, presented his fall couture collection as the season's guest designer for Jean Paul Gaultier. And Chanel’s interim in-house team following the departure of Virginie Viard designed pieces that included dramatic taffeta capes and hair bows.

Below, here are my favorite looks from the top 7 shows of the week.
