Beloved 14-year-old Sengkang wanton mee stall shuts down, owner leaves touching farewell message
Huang Kee Hong Kong Style Wanton Noodles in Sengkang will permanently shutter by the end of March.
Recently, patrons of the wanton mee stall in Sengkang 266 Coffeeshop were devastated to find an announcement regarding the closure pasted at its front.
Written in Chinese, the notice poignantly expresses the owner’s deep gratitude towards their loyal customers which have been a pillar of support for the past 14 years. It also states that Huang Kee Wanton Noodles will end operations in the last week of March.
“I’ve watched children grow up, watched couples walk into the marriage hall hand in hand and then have babies of their own. These scenes linger in my mind, like precious paintings. There’s so much I’d like to say, but words aren’t powerful enough to express them. Fourteen years of your company have filled my shop with warmth and meaning.”
“I hope that when you eat wanton noodles in the future, you will occasionally think of this shop and the familiar taste of the dish.”
Huang Kee’s popularity stems from its generous wanton noodle portions. This is especially so for the dumplings, which many diners have complimented for the remarkable size and amount of filling. They contain fish paste, which while not everyone likes is still loved by many.
The staff has also been commended for their quick service and being friendly and attentive to every customer despite the long queues. For instance, a Google reviewer mentioned his experience when he planned to dabao several orders from the stall. The staff had urged him to sit down to eat his dine-in meal first so that they could cook his order fresh to go after he finished.
If you’d like to visit Huang Kee Hong Kong Style Wanton Noodles before it closes, order their popular Char Siew Wanton Noodle (S$5). Other than the wantons, customers also love the well-marinated char siew and tasty radish soup.
Feeling sentimental yet? You should be – this is your final chance to head down before March ends to say goodbye to this beloved stall.
