It has been 12 years since the establishment of Indonesia's JKT48, the first overseas sister group, and since then, many sister groups have been developed throughout Asia.

AKB48, the first one of its kind named after the Akihabara area in Tokyo, was founded by Yasushi Akimoto, who wanted to form a girl group with its own theatre.

Akimoto had since expanded the AKB48 concept to several girl groups within Japan, and internationally in mainland China, Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan, and Philippines.
