9 things to keep your child busy this school holiday
1 month of school holiday in Singapore can pass by in a flash!
With a month-long school holiday, there’s only so much time you can kill if you were to take your kids overseas. To ensure these little “monsters” make the best use of their time at home, you may be wondering what can keep them busy and productive.
To help you get started, we’ve curated a list of things you can let them do during this school holiday. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy; all play and no work makes Jack a mere toy. So, make sure you choose the right balance of these things to keep your kids occupied!
1. Read some great stories
If your kids already love reading, that’s awesome. Otherwise, bring them to the library to borrow some books or get some new interesting storybooks to build up a reading habit!
Money Friends - Dollars & Cents, S$16
It Ends with Us: A Novel by Colleen Hoover (UK edition, paperback), S$15.58
2. Grow some plants
This works best if you start by sowing seeds since your kids can take part in the whole flowering process. Go for edible plants like tomatoes, bell peppers, mint, and basil, and your kids can literally reap what they sow.
Sprout lab | PP Seedling Seed Starter Tray with Lid, S$28.80
Fatty Seeds Green Red Leaf Bayam, S$4.50
3. Fill up the colouring books
Colouring not only can unleash their creativity, but it can also keep them occupied for hours. If your kids prefer something more intellectual, you can also get them some crossword puzzles or sudoku books.
Mideer Drawing Colouring Book, S$7.90 (was S$19)
The Kids' Book of Crosswords 1 by Gareth Moore (UK edition, paperback), S$10.58
4. Go cycling
Learning to cycle is one of the easiest skills to pick up when young. It is also a good outdoor activity to burn your kids’ energy in the day, making them tired quicker come nighttime. Perhaps, you can even get more me-time at night.
TAKACHIA™ BMX 14in 16in 18in Anti-rust 8kg Kid Bicycle, S$209 (was S$299)
5. Break a sweat
If cycling is not their thing, try other activities that can get their hearts pumping.
Kocotree Children Skipping Rope, S$10 (was S$13.78)
Speedo Infant Boys & Girls Kids Goggles, S$20 (was S$25)
6. Learn a musical instrument
While soaking up some vitamin D from the sun is good, getting your kids to settle down and learn music is also beneficial. Whether it is a piano or a guitar, learning a musical instrument can help train them to become more disciplined and committed.
Eversalute Kids Piano Toy 61 Keys Keyboard Digital, S$25.80 (was S$26.81)
Asahi AS40C (Assorted Colours) Acoustic Guitar 40 inch, S$95 (was S$159)
7. Go on a family outing
You don’t have to go overseas for some family bonding time. Instead, you can plan an outing to local attractions or even keep it simple with a barbecue or picnic.
Outdoor Picnic Mat / Baby Mat / Waterproof Beach Pad / Camping Mat, S$9.30 (was S$20)
Large Capacity Picnic Basket, S$9.30 (was S$20)
8. Cook or bake something together
Another activity to enhance your relationship with your kids is to cook or bake something together. After all, cooking is a life skill and you’ll get to enjoy something delicious afterwards!
Simplus Air Fryer Parchment 50pc Baking Paper, S$8.80 (was S$29.80)
Philadelphia Philly Baking Dish, S$40
9. Keep up with studying
All things said though, we must not neglect studies during this holiday. Preparing for the new school term is crucial too. As much as assessment books are annoying, it is unfortunately a necessary evil.
