Trader Joes

Spring has officially sprung at Trader Joe’s! By that we mean that if you take a stroll over to your neighborhood TJ’s, you’ll be greeted by an array of new (and a few returning) seasonal snacks and other products. Many of these items were discussed in depth on the latest episode of the Inside Trader Joe's podcast, which is co-hosted by TJ's employees Matt Sloan, vice president of marketing, and Tara Miller, marketing director.

So, what newbies can you expect to find at Trader Joe’s these days? Get ready for everyday new products such as Piquant Popcorn, as well as limited newbies like Dulce de Leche Ice Cream. What’s more? Frequent Trader Joe’s shoppers will be thrilled to know that the wildly popular Lemon Mini Sheet Cake is back for a limited time. The chain ordered more than twice the amount of lemon cake it did last year, so it will likely stay on store shelves for more than two weeks, but fans should still run to their local TJ’s ASAP if they want a chance at scooping up the beloved dessert before it sells out for the season. Piquant Popcorn

This “zesty” popcorn is an everyday item that shoppers can expect to find at Trader Joe’s now. This version of the snack food is “seasoned with nutritional yeast, onion, sea salt, and garlic,” which gives the popcorn a cheese-like taste without using dairy. As Sloan noted, this item is packed with umami.

Glazed Chocolate Donut Holes

If you have a sweet tooth, you’re going to love this new Trader Joe’s item, which just so happens to be dairy- and gluten-free. Per TJ’s bakery team boss Amy, these donut holes are “airy” yet “rich and full of chocolatey cocoa.” According to Miller, these poppable snacks don’t even taste like they’re void of gluten. Pro tip: Heat these puppies up in the air fryer for that fresh donut deliciousness.

Lemon Mini Sheet Cake

This returning item is a limited product, which means that once it sells out it’s gone for good, or at least until next spring. It sold out in just two weeks following its debut last year, thanks to its light and airy texture with a sour cream base. Made with lemon zest and lemon juice, this frosted cake is “so delicious and impressive,” according to Miller, and can even be used as part of a layer cake if you’re feeling fancy. Expect to spot this dessert in stores beginning in mid-March.

Cinnamon Twist Danish

Straight from Denmark, this monster of a confection is “a round coiled pastry with cinnamon, custard, and sugar,” according to Miller. Amy also noted that shoppers can think of this kringle-inspired treat as “a super-sized cinnamon bun.” The dense pastry can also be heated in the air fryer if you want that fresh-out-of-the-oven feeling. Per insiders, it “tastes even better” this way. Customers can find this pastry in stores in late March, and it will be available alongside TJ’s Raspberry Kringle—a popular returning item.

Brown Sugar Boba Mochi

This “gooey” new candy item boasts a squishy rice dough exterior surrounding a boba pearl. “It’s all about the texture,” noted Sloan. “It’s very sweet, and that’s fun to eat. It’s like a neat, chewy, fluffy thing.”

Dulce de Leche Ice Cream

Miller describes this new frozen dessert as “caramel flavored ice cream with a smooth milk caramel swirl.” According to Sloan, the limited treat would thrive as part of a spin on an affogato, thanks to its dense texture and rich flavor. Get ready to see this ice cream in the freezer section in late March.

Sicilian Organic Lemon Juice

This shelf-stable newbie stands out from similar products because it’s made with Sicilian lemons and doesn’t include any preservatives. It’s also not made from concentrate, and consists of just one ingredient—fresh, organic lemon juice. Expect to see this everyday item in stores now!

Thai Peanut Satay Sauce

Already in stores, this everyday item, which just so happens to be vegan, is better than any prior version of peanut sauce Trader Joe’s has released. “It is a thinner, more pourable consistency than some of the more paste-like versions,” Sloan shared. “Using this is really easy to spoon over grilled chicken, grilled tofu, and grilled fish, or to spoon over and toss into noodles. It's got an amazing flavor.”

The Puppet Skin Contact Wine

This wine, which is orange due to more skin contact with the grapes, is back for another year. The alcoholic beverage has a more potent taste, as well as a different mouthfeel and heavier body when compared to white wines shoppers may be more familiar with. It pairs well with many different foods, and is expected to be available nationwide at Trader Joe’s Wine Shops this spring.

The Puppet Chillable Red Wine

While it’s not typical to serve red wine cold, certain red wines made with lighter grapes can totally be enjoyed chilled. Serve this wine at about 50 degrees, and sip it as temperatures outside begin to rise. Like the orange wine, this one will be available at Trader Joe’s Wine Shops across the country near the end of the month.
