7-year-old Jalan Besar wanton mee eatery gets chased out of premises
Wanton Fu at 380 Jalan Besar is one of my personal favourite wanton mee spots to fuel up after a late jogging session with my friends. Unfortunately, after 7 years of occupying the space at ARC380, it suddenly announced on an Instagram post dated 28 Dec 2024 that their last day of operations will be on 27 Jan 2025.
Wanton Fu is known for their delicious bowls of wanton me with their house-made wantons and dumplings, as well as their self-roasted char siew and roast pork. I love the free-flow pork lard and roasted garlic flakes available at the counter for customers to help themselves. Oh, and let’s not forget about the super spicy chilli sauce!
Is their business not doing well? Well, sort of. Sean, the owner, shared, “Our business towards the end of 2024 had been bad and tough.” But that wasn’t the reason why they are suddenly vacating the premises.
Sean had just renewed their contract with the landlord in May 2024, but in an unexpected turn of events, they were told that their unit had been sold off already. “We were given 2 months to reinstate back and move out from their unit,” he added.
Sean and his wife, Ani, who also works at Wanton Fu, feel both sad and hesitant about leaving the area. “We were given such a short notice and it’s so close to the Chinese New Year period. It’s a challenge to find somewhere desirable to move to. We are currently on the lookout for other locations.”
Meanwhile, Sean and Ani welcome everyone to continue supporting Wanton Fu until their final operation day. Sean said, “It’s not a goodbye but a see you later.” Most of their regulars (including myself) hope that the couple will be able to find somewhere within the Jalan Besar vicinity.
