S$29 BCM & laksa at London’s Singapulah – premium fare but out of reach?
The greatest pain of travelling abroad? I’ve learnt from one too many friends’ laments that it’s the inability to tuck into your favourite chicken rice or bak chor mee just anytime.
For the homesick Singaporean in London longing for a taste of home, you’ll be able to able to get just that at Singapulah. It’s a new restaurant in the heart of the city that boasts a menu of familiar Singaporean favourites.
Singapulah opened on 15 Feb 2024 on Shaftesbury Avenue in London’s Soho district. It’s the brainchild of Singapore-born restauranteur Ellen Chew and is her second Singaporean-style restaurant in London after Rasa Sayang.
Singapulah’s menu is a celebration of Singaporean cuisine and culture, and offers an array of hawker and zi char-style dishes.
However, don’t expect to find prices you’ll see in Singapore.
Singapulah’s Bak Chor Mee and Laksa cost a whopping £16.95 each, which is approximately S$28.90. Likewise, a simple bowl of Fishball Noodles sets you back £14.95 (approx. $25.49) while Kopi Pork Ribs and Oyster Omelette go for £15.95 (approx. S$27.19) and £13.95 (approx. S$23.78) respectively.
The restaurant also shows off several local brands. For instance, the Laksa stars mee tai mak noodles from LG Foods, while the Bak Chor Mee uses chilli fishballs from DoDo and mee pok from Hiap Giap.
The menu’s dessert section also includes Mao Shan Wang Durian Ice Cream (£6.50, approx. S$11.08) from Udders and Kueh Salat (£5.50, approx. S$9.37) from Lek Lim Nyonya Kueh.
Menu aside, Singapulah is sure to make you feel right at home with its nostalgic decor reminiscent of our heartlands.
Much like a mama shop, its shelves are stacked with old-school knick-knacks like country erasers and paper board games, alongside Milo tins and childhood snacks. It also sports an exit sign that mimics the aesthetic of a 4-language “Danger – Keep Out” sign.
So, if you’re in London and you miss Singapore just a little more today, Singapulah’s there for you.
