If you live in Sunway, it’s simply impossible not to be familiar with the famous Garlic Roasted Chicken Rice Shop situated right opposite Sunway College and University.

The must-try here is exactly what the name of the stall is— Garlic Roasted Chicken Rice (RM6.50). It comes with crispy and fragrant fried garlic sprinkled atop the roasted chicken along with a handful of chopped spring onions and cilantro. A little heads up if you’re planning to have your lunch here, the chicken rice sells out by 1pm because of how tasty and affordable it is.

Located in Taman Bukit Indah, Canton-Z Chicken Rice has created a name for itself due to its affordable prices and having the tastiest chicken rice in town.

A generous plate filled with roast chicken, siew yoke and char siew, rice and soup will only set you back RM13. And just a plate of roast chicken and rice will cost you RM5. Serving  such tender meat paired with its juicy, crispy chicken skin, it’s no surprise why Canton-Z Chicken Rice is flooded with customers all the way from breakfast to lunch.

A little surprise about Hong Kong Taste 1975 it is run by the owner of Canton-Z Chicken Rice. It definitely explains why the prices are so affordable and that the chicken rice is so tasty!

Located in Pudu, looking for a parking space might be difficult but it’s definitely worth the effort for a taste of their roast chicken. With the gleaming juicy chicken skin and its tender meat, you’ll be hooked for life. And it will only cost you RM5 a plate! Don’t miss out on the melt-in-the-mouth char siew which usually sells out before 12pm.

If you’re ever in Semenyih, don’t forget to drop by Lek Kii Chicken Rice. Located in a housing neighbourhood, they’re known for their roast chicken.

A plate of roast chicken, char siew, siu yoke, rice and soup will cost you RM13. The fragrant rice pairs well with the tender roast chicken. And you can’t skip out on the amazing homemade chilli sauce. Each table had a whole bottle of it and I had three bowls!

5. Restoran Wong Mei Kee

Wong Mei Kee is touted as one of the best roasted pork places in KL. It’s colloquially known as ‘Datuk roasted pork’ as its owner has been conferred a Datukship.

This restaurant is only open for a couple of hours a day but even then the food sells out within the hours! You have to try the roast chicken (RM7), known for its exceptional flavour and crispy skin. Be warned, you might have to queue for an hour or more just for a plate.

6. Loke Yun Chicken Rice

In 2007, Loke Yun was unofficially placed in the top three of a nationwide chicken rice competition. They are known to serve “the best Hainanese chicken rice in Malaysia”.

You can opt for the kampung chicken which has a stronger flavour and firmer flesh or the more common and cheaper farmed chicken. The crowning glory however, is the rice— slightly sticky but flavourful, and cooked in chicken stock.

7. Nasi Ayam Kam Kee

Located along Jalan Sultan, Nasi Ayam Kam Kee is known for its chicken rice. When you walk into the restaurant, you will be greeted by the heavenly scent of the chicken rice. A good start, if you ask me.

Their roast chicken (RM5.50) is best paired with the homemade ginger chilli sauce. Or opt for a plate of halal Hainanese chicken rice topped with light soy sauce. They also serve other dishes such as meatball soup, assam fish, curry mutton and long beans.

8. Restoran Satellite 33

Restoran Satellite 33, although less known when compared to the previously mentioned chicken rice shops, serves really good chicken rice and crispy roasted pork belly. Try the chilli sauce— it’s spicy, sweet and garlicky— the perfect companion to the delicious steamed chicken.

As an additional dish, do order a serving of their pork meatballs— it’s absolutely bouncy and has great flavour.

9. Prosperity Bowl

Since 2011, Prosperity Bowl has been renowned for serving one of the best chicken rice and noodle dishes in Klang Valley. The restaurant also won the title of the Best Chicken Rice in Klang Valley in Star People Food Awards 2014.

Enjoy Hainanese steamed chicken with rice or a bowl of noodles. Prosperity Bowl’s poached free-range chicken has a gelatinous-smooth skin and is served over soy sauce and home-made chilli sauce. The bean sprouts served here are from Ipoh which is known for its crisp taste.

10. James Chicken Rice

Located within Restaurant Choon Yien is the popular James Chicken Rice. The appeal of this particular chicken rice stall is the roast chicken, which is tender and smooth, even for the breast cut. It’s topped with a generous sprinkling of fried garlic, so garlic fans (like me), rejoice!

You’ll have to get here early as the dishes sell out pretty fast. My best advise is for you to reach before 12.30pm.
