You're a millionaire: Netizens slam Edison Chen's plea for school reconstruction donations

20 Jan - Edison Chen recently found himself receiving the same treatment as Hollywood actors from netizens, though not in a positive way.

On 16 January, the former Hong Kong actor posted a message on social media, revealing that his daughter Alaia's school in Pacific Palisades was greatly impacted by the LA wildfires and that they need all the help they can get to rebuild it.

"Please contribute to the reconstruction of the school. Alaia and the Chen family deeply appreciate any help you can provide. Most importantly, we ask everyone to send love and positive vibes to the areas devastated by the fire," he added.

Edison also added a QR Code in the post for everyone to donate.

However, not everybody was amused by the request, with many saying that the school was located in a wealthy area.

"Dude, you are a millionaire. You can rebuild 10 of them," posted one netizen.

Another wrote, "California is the richest place in the United States. There are so many celebrities and rich people. They don't donate themselves, but ask ordinary people who don't have a good life to donate. What's yours?"

Others criticised Edison for living a luxurious life in the US and having the gall to ask for his Chinese fans for help.

"You only care about your daughter's school abroad. So many people lost their homes in the earthquake in Tibet. It's fine if you don't help the country, but you also want us to donate money to foreign capitalists to rebuild schools. How ironic!"

In response to criticisms, Edison said, "I have donated and will continue to donate. This is an initiative started by the school and an opportunity to spread positive energy. You don't have to donate, you just need to spread love."

It is noted that actress Mandy Moore was previously bashed by social media users for the GoFundMe that was set up to help her in-laws who also faced losses from the LA wildfires.
