Wong Cho Lam admits gambling with first directorial effort
11 Feb – Wong Cho Lam recently admitted that he took a big gamble when he decided to helm a musical as his first project as a movie director.
As reported on Singtao Daily, the comedy actor, who spoke about his directorial debut, "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change!", shared that while he understands the risk of introducing a concept that is unfamiliar to Hong Kong movies, it was also the kind of genre that he has always loved.
"I really believed that I have do a subject that I like and a project that will satisfy my investors. They gave me a lot of suggestions, so in the end, the movie got a Lunar New Year release," he said.
Wong stated that while his is not the first musical film in the Chinese film industry, he is glad to make a musical comedy that is purely Hong Kong.
"The last Hong Kong musical would be back in the black and white era. We also have "Perhaps Love" in recent years, but that movie wasn't purely musical," he said.
At the same time, the first-time director admitted that the audiences' reception of the movie will determine whether he will continue to direct more movie projects in the future or just stick with acting.
