This Whisky Glass Is Shaped Like a Mask to Deliver the Ultimate Sipping Experience
We’re all well acquainted with masks after the past few years, but that still doesn’t apply to drinking whisky. That is until now, with the introduction of the Smoke Mask, a new whisky glass from scotch brand Smokehead that covers your mouth and nose while you sip for the ultimate sensory experience.
Smokehead is a single malt scotch brand owned by Ian Macleod Distillers, the company behind distilleries like Rosebank, Tamdhu, and Glengoyne. Smokehead doesn’t have its own distillery, and while the exact source of the whisky is not revealed, the brand does say that it comes from Islay—the region of Scotland where Lagavulin, Laphroaig, and Ardbeg are located, among distilleries. Smokehead whisky is fairly heavily peated, as one might expect from the name and the source, and there are a few different expressions available including Tequila Cask Terminado, Rum Cask Rebel, and Twisted Stout.

The Smoke Mask was designed by artist and glassblower Elliot Walker, winner of season two of the Netflix show Blown Away, and according to “Chief Smokehead” Michael Brown, it’s designed to cover your mouth and nose as you drink so you’re hit with aromas and flavors at the same time and have a heightened nosing and tasting experience. The Smoke Mask is made from blown glass and has a twisted silver base and gold skull seal on the front in keeping with the overall Smokehead aesthetic.
“This project enables us to stay true to our ethos that Smokehead never limits the ways its whisky can be enjoyed,” Brown said. “We hope the Smoke Mask will be so aspirational that drinkers of other malts will be enticed to use it too.” It also kind of makes you look like Bane from The Dark Knight Rises, which is pretty cool.
We got a preview of the Smoke Mask, and while it might not be the most practical way to drink whisky, it certainly is a unique experience that does envelope you with aroma as you sip. This is particularly true with a peated single malt like Smokehead, but it’s worth trying with other whiskies as well. The Smoke Mask will not be available in the U.S. until 2024, but you can find various Smokehead expressions to try now from retailers like Total Wine.
