Travellers looking for an authentic trip to Italy this season will want to know where Italians go for their summer holidays in Italy. That's why we spoke to our friends at Booking.com to find out the places that Italians are booking for their staycations this year.
Unsurprisingly, capital city Rome took the top spot for the destination where the most hotels have been booked by Italians this July, August, September.
Southern Italian city Naples came second, where visitors can feast on the best pizza, visit the islands of Procida and Ischia, and explore the wider Campania region or head to lesser-known Basilicata.
Italians love soaking up the sun at the beach as much as anyone throughout the summer months and Rimini on the Adriatic Coast was the top seaside spot and the third most popular destination booked this year. Located in Emilia-Romagna and less than an hour on the train from Bologna, Rimini is known as the capital of Italian seaside tourism.
The coastal city and birthplace of film director Federico Fellini is mostly overlooked by British travellers who tend to travel to the Amalfi Coast or Sardinia to get their beach fix.
Rimini is loved for its shallow water, sandy beaches and unpretentious way of life. Its coastline is ideal for all, especially families.
The city is also famed for its nightlife, attracting young Italians, while culture buffs can get to know Rimini's Roman ruins, its historic bridge and charming neighbourhoods, like Borgo San Giuliano.
