What we learned from the Star Wars: Rogue One trailer

The final ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ trailer is online… and it’s awesome.

It’s finally here - the new ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ trailer gives us a much better look at the galaxy far, far away. Starring Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso, ‘Rogue One’ follows the story of a plucky band of rebels and their mission to secure the Death Star plans.

And this latest trailer gives us an action packed glimpse of ‘Rogue One’.

But what did we learn?

There’s plenty of new info if you know where to look. Everything from Jyn Erso’s family, the origins of the ‘Rogue One’ call sign and even a glimpse of an iconic ‘Star Wars’ villain.

And no, we don’t mean Darth Vader…

Here’s what we learned from the new ‘Rogue One’ trailer:

Jyn is a prisoner of the Empire

It’s obvious that Jyn Erso has had more than a few run-ins with the Empire. But it looks as though the Rebel Alliance finds her in Imperial custody… and they decide to break her out.

“Our rebellion is all that remains to push back the Empire,” explains Mon Mothma. “We think you might be able to help us.”

Jyn’s father helped create the Death Star

It’s flashback time! We’ve all heard the rumours that Jyn’s father, Galen Erso, was involved in the creation of the Death Star. Well, it looks as though he was more than just involved, as the Rebel Alliance catches Jyn up on how her estranged father is involved with the Empire.

“It appears he’s critical to the development of a superweapon,” says iconic Rebel Alliance figurehead, Mon Mothma. And she’s not kidding.

Essentially, Galen is a scientist who dabbles in energy research… and Director Krennic has managed to coerce him into working for the Empire. Will the Rebels get him out before Erso outlives his usefulness?

‘Rogue One’ call sign was made up on the spot

It’s no accident that the first ‘Star Wars’ spin-off was called ‘Rogue One’.

‘Rogue Squadron’ was the elite group of Rebel Alliance pilots who fought in the Battle of Hoth during ‘The Empire Strikes Back’… and before the film’s official announcement, many ‘Star Wars’ fans thought the film may have something to do with those ace X-Wing pilots.

But now the new trailer shows us exactly where the ‘Rogue One’ moniker comes from.

K-2SO prompts pilot Bodhi Rook (played by Riz Ahmed) for a call sign… who randomly coins the now-iconic codename. “It’s ummm…. Rogue,” he says. “Rogue One.” Cool.

Director Krennic faces Darth Vader

It’s no secret that Darth Vader has mixed feelings about his Imperial cohort… and he has a bit of a track record when it comes to choking his colleagues. Now, it looks as though ‘Rogue One’ villain, Director Orson Krennic, will face a stern grilling from Vader.

And he’s just as overconfident as poor old Admiral Motti.

“The power that we are dealing with here is immeasurable,” he says. But it looks as though Vader isn’t taking his boasts lightly. Clearly, Vader doesn’t Force choke him just yet, but will Krennic feel the power of the Dark Side?

Saw Gerrera has a robotic leg

He was introduced in the animated TV show, ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’. Now, Saw Gerrera will be joining the Rebel Alliance on their missions to steal the Death Star plans.

But he may have changed a bit…

Originally, Saw Gerrera was the young leader of a group of rebels who managed to liberate his home planet of Onderon. But time has not been kind to the rebel leader, who is played by Forest Whitaker in ‘Rogue One’ and who now sports a cybernetic leg. We had heard of his injury thanks to an appearance in the recently unveiled toy line… but this is the first time we’ve seen his robotic leg in action. Chilling.

Jyn’s undercover as Imperial ground crew

It’s no secret that Jyn Erso is heading undercover. After all, we’ve seen plenty of cool shots of her disguised in Imperial uniform for the most daring part of the ‘Rogue One’ mission. But now it looks as though we’ve got a much closer look at her costume.

After suiting up as ‘Imperial ground crew’ it looks as though Jyn is

And she’s even got an ‘Imperial’ escort thanks to K-2SO and Captain Andor in disguise.

K-2SO climbs into the cockpit

Stuffy, good-for-nothing protocol droids are a thing of the past with Alan Tudyk’s K-2SO.

Instead, the former-Imperial droid looks to be leaping straight into the action as he clambers into the cockpit of a (presumably) rebel ship.

And that’s not all…

When he’s not piloting starships, K-2SO can be seen leaping into uncharted waters as he escorts his undercover pals deep behind enemy lines. It looks as though K-2SO is quite the robotic commando. Just don’t ask him to carry your bags - he’s not that kind of droid.

A glimpse of Grand Moff Tarkin?

Does ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ feature a cool cameo from Grand Moff Tarkin?

About halfway through the trailer, a young Imperial with slicked back hair is seen striding into a room full of fellow officers… and his commanding presence grabs the attention of just about everyone in the room.

No, it’s not Director Krennic, but the young Imperial officer certainly has a fair bit of clout. At least, that’s the vibe we’re getting from this scene. Of course, it makes sense for Tarkin to appear in ‘Rogue One’ - he oversaw the construction of the Death Star and used the Empire’s superweapon to destroy Alderaan in ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’.

Will this turn out to be Tarkin?

For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But it’s got us convinced.

‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ heads to cinemas on 16 December 2016.
