Weekend guide (30 June to 2 July): Pink Dot 2017, Britney Live in Singapore

The June holidays might be over, but there are plenty of events this weekend that will bring you back into the holiday mood, even if just for a while. From the annual Pink Dot event to concerts, fairs and races, you are spoiled for choice.

1. Pink Dot 2017

Pink Dot is back again this year in support of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community in Singapore. The annual event sees attendees gathering to form a ‘pink dot’. This year’s event is in support of the ‘freedom to love’. Event-goers can also look forward to a performance by singer Nathan Hartono, who is one of the ambassadors this year, alongside television performer Ebi Shankara and Paralympic swimmer Theresa Goh.

2. Britney Live in Singapore

Fans of Britney Spears, rejoice! The pop performer will be holding a one-night concert in Singapore, nearly after 20 years since her last performance here which was a closed-door showcase. Concert-goers can expect to hear Britney’s latest hits along with all time crowd favourites including “Oops!… I Did It Again”.

3. CNBLUE ‘Between Us’ Asia Tour

Kpop boyband CNBLUE will also be in town this weekend for their ‘Between Us’ Asia Tour, with Singapore being the first of seven stops. Other songs from their latest album, 7°CN, include ‘Calling You’ and ‘Royal Rumble’.

4. SHINE Festival

Back for its 12th run, this year’s SHINE Festival is headlined by K-pop sensation Jessica Jung. Look forward to a great line-up of home-grown acts such as The Sam Willows and Shigga Shay. Event-goers can also explore the Digital Canvas tunnel, participate in a gaming showdown and try new food at the Food Truck Nation.

5. World Snack Park

Foodies will love the World Snack Park as it brings in more than 1,000 international snacks brands from over 20 countries. Try out cup noodles imported directly from Japan at the new Cup Noodle Park and get your hands on some yummy Hokkaido ice cream as well. Snack deals are as cheap as any two or three snack sets for just $10.

6. Baby World Fair 2017

There is no better place to try and compare baby products than the Baby World Fair. Parents can find all their baby essentials from prams to car seats and even innovative products such as clothing and feeding accessories. The fair sees more than 150,000 products from over a thousand boutique baby brands.

7. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in Concert

For the first time in Singapore, a live symphony orchestra performing music to picture, every note from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The film will be screened in high-definition on a 40-foot screen.

8. Singapore Cantonese Opera Festival 2017

This year’s Singapore Cantonese Opera Festival features three shows over three days. The shows, namely, “The Lady Magistrate Xie Yao Huan”, “The Spirit Temptress Nie Xiao Xian” and “Cantonese Opera Spectacular” are written by homegrown playwrights.

9. Flash X-Country Grand Prix 2017 – Event 1

This one’s for the athletic ones out there. By the Flash Athletics Club, Flash X-Country Grand Prix 2017 comprises three legs, run over four months. For the first event this weekend, participants can push their boundaries for the 5km run near Punggol Waterways Park.

10. Sunday Studio: Marble Patterns

Head over to the National Gallery where you can take part in the second part of a four-part art event, the Sunday Studio: Marble Patterns. Participants will learn marbling techniques and experiment with creating a range of patterns on fabric and paper.

11. The Good Old Days: Science Centre

Science Centre Singapore is having a picnic and movie event where families can come together to play traditional games and do science experiments at activity booths while reliving the good old days. You will also be able to catch a movie and gaze at the stars through telescopes once the sun sets.

12. BooksActually at Books & Beer

Books & Beer is turning six and will be celebrating the milestone with an exciting line-up of activities. Join in the literary-themed whisky appreciation workshop and a curated reading by BooksActually, featuring famed local poet Cyril Wong. Delicious food such as pasta and beef fries will be provided as well.

13. Book Launch of UnFree Verse

Another event for the bookworms is the book launch of UnFree Verse. The book champions an overlooked aspect of Singapore’s literary history – formal poetry in English. Featuring a total of 179 poems by 83 poets, readers can explore the dynamic landscape of poetry around Singapore.
